Performance:
Setting up the Optane is pretty straightforward. Just plug the Intel buffer into the motherboard, boot the machine and install the Intel Optane Memory software. Not only that, you can even use this hard drive to install Windows without using caching.
The first test was with CrystalDiskMark, a familiar speed measurement software used to measure the read speed of storage drives. After being activated, the drive read speed of WD Blue drives jumped to nearly 1GB per second. Of course, the write speed is almost entirely retained by Intel Optane, which has been set up as a memory buffer to boost read speeds for traditional hard drives. Surely many readers will never think a HDD can have such terrible reading speed.
With AIDA64’s Disk Benchmark toolkit, read speed is also astonishing, with a maximum of up to 900MB / sec. Access time though is slower than the NVMe in the market but we can not be more demanding because this cheap combo has a lot more storage capacity.
The AS SSD tool also yields towering results in read-write tests as well as unpacking. Indeed, the speed buffered with the WD Optics’ Intel Optane surprised me so much. This read speed is almost double that of SATA III SSDs, including the most advanced ones in the market.
