Besides the two high-end headphone models Solis 2 and Beautiful World, Moondrop also introduced other headphone models in the low-cost segment: Space Travel, Chu 2 and most notably, Moondrop Starfield 2.
As the successor to Starfield, Starfield 2 has a beautiful, sparkling appearance like the stars. Accompanied by an upgraded driver configuration in terms of materials, it promises to bring more interesting sound experiences. Now let’s come to a detailed review of Moondrop Starfield 2.
Packaging and accessories
Moondrop products are always highly appreciated for their packaging design and Starfield 2 is no exception. The headset along with the accessory set is packaged in a beautifully designed cardboard box.
Featured on the front is the image of a beautiful long-haired waifu wearing the Starfield 2 IEM on her ear and the scene of the starry sky behind the waifu reminds a lot of the meaning of the name “Starfield”. In the left corner of the cover box will be printed the words “Moondrop Presents” and “Starfield II” in a beautifully stylized font.
All information about the headset, including technical specifications and sound charts, will be printed on the back of the cover box. Accessories included with the headset include:
- 1 cable
- 3 pairs of silicone eartips size S/M/L
- 1 high quality faux leather carrying case
- 10 pieces of plastic used to cover the vent
- User manuals
- QC certification card
- Instruction card on how to wear headphones properly
Design and wearing experience
The appearance of Moondrop Starfield 2 is likened to a combination of Stellaris and Starfield. The housing has an appearance quite similar to Starfield, while the outer coating and decorative patterns will have many similarities to Stellaris. This combination makes Starfield 2 one of the most beautiful headphones in the entry segment.
The housing part continues to be made from alloy and undergoes machining by CNC technology to increase the precision of each line. Covering the outer surface of the housing is a beautiful dark blue paint layer. And to add more highlights to the headset, the motifs on the faceplate will have a luxurious, sophisticated copper gold color.
The rounded lines on the housing will partly reduce the phenomenon of ear strain and increase the fit when wearing the headset on the ear. Similar to Chu 2, Starfield 2’s sound pipe is also made of gold-plated brass. With anti-corrosion and anti-rust properties, brass material will bring impressive durability to the sound duct part. Users can disassemble the head of the sound pipe to replace or clean the filter inside. This detail on Starfield 2 is similar to Chu 2.
Right below the sound duct will be 2 vent pipes. The interesting thing is that users can completely close a vent pipe to increase compactness, force and depth for the bass range. Included with Starfield 2 will be a total of 10 plastic pieces used to cover the vents.
The cable that comes with Moondrop Starfield 2 has very good finishing, eye-catching overall color and good anti-tangle ability. The cable is cross-braided from 4 wire cores made of silver-plated copper. The outer shell of the cable is covered with a layer of blue plastic. Meanwhile, the connector, Y-splitter and plug are made of metal and painted in a beautiful copper yellow color. The cable uses a 0.78mm 2-pin connector and a gold-plated 3.5mm jack.
Driver configuration and sound quality
Moondrop Starfield 2 is also equipped with a single dynamic driver on each side of the housing like Starfield. However, the speaker membrane will be made from Lithium and Magnesium alloy instead of Carbon Nanotube material. In addition to higher hardness and lighter weight than beryllium, Lithium and Magnesium alloys also possess impressive damping coefficients that help eliminate resonance and minimize sound distortion more effectively.
In terms of specifications, Starfield 2 has a frequency response range of 20Hz – 20kHz, sensitivity of 122dB and operates at an impedance of 15Ohm. For the sound quality of Starfield 2 to be most clearly shown, users should burn-in the headset for about 72 hours. Overall, Moondrop’s latest headphones have a bright sound quality with emphasis on the treble range and upper mid. The low mid section is gentle while the bass range tends to be neat, not too rich in internal power.
Starfield 2 has a technically tuned bass range with fast response speed, relatively good resolution and just enough volume. The volume is more concentrated in the subbass and gradually decreases when approaching the midbass. The structure of the bass range is quite neat and has good control, minimizing the encroachment into the mid range. To make the bass range deeper and richer, users should close a vent. However, there will be a limitation: the openness of the soundstage will be narrowed.
The mid range on Starfield 2 is adjusted in a slight U-Shape direction. The low mid part will be placed back a bit while the upper mid part will be facing forward to increase the presence of female vocals and some musical instruments such as guitar and snare. Starfield 2’s instrument performance is sharp and highly flexible. But the most impressive part is the lively and energetic female voice. There is a bit of regret in the male vocals because the low mid part lacks warmth. To overcome this, users can combine Starfield 2 with Truthear Shio DAC/AMP, iFi Go Link or iFi Hip Dac 2.
Benefiting from the detailed upper mid section, Starfield 2’s treble range sounds very bright, clear and airy. The small minus point is that some parts of the music will have a slight sib sound. Burn-in carefully and for enough time will reduce the intensity of the sib sound.
Moving on to the technical part, Starfield 2 has a very wide and airy soundstage. The width of the sound stage is very impressive, while the depth and height do not leave much of an impression, just at a pretty average level. The sound imaging part is the strongest point of Starfield 2. The ability to separate extremely detailed instruments along with very precise positioning ability allows Starfield 2 to express extremely excellent musical instruments.
Still possessing the signature sound of Moondrop but wearing a colorful vest, Moondrop Starfield 2 will obviously be the top choice for music lovers.
