It’s not difficult to find smartphones in the price range with better configuration than Reno5, but it’s a completely different story in nearly every other aspect.

Before the tumultuous 2020 because of Covid-19 ended, Oppo still launched its “last” smartphone, the mid-range Reno5 smartphone. That’s a respectable achievement, as this has been the 5th generation of the Reno smartphone series in less than two years. It is also true to say that it is because of the fierceness of the market, but this shows us how the smartphone market is constantly pushing new limits. Seen through the eyes of the consumer, that is a good thing and should be encouraged.

A new, youthful back design is the highlight.

While manufacturers are still stuck in finding the most optimal solution for overflow screens, the back is a place for them to unleash their creativity with customizations to make their devices unique, attractive. On Reno5, Oppo brings a new design with a Reno Glow coating like thousands of microscopic glowing crystals that create an eye-catching gradient effect when changing the viewing angle. Unfortunately, unlike the 5G version, the Reno5 4G only has a back and plastic frame instead of tempered glass.

Slightly thicker and heavier than Reno4 due to its larger battery, Reno5’s “triple measurement” is 159.1 x 73.3 x 7.7mm respectively, weighs 171g, still very thin and light compared to other smartphones on the market. Combined with the slightly rough Reno Glow coating that minimizes sweat and fingerprints and the 2.5D curved sides, Reno5 is one of the smartphones with the best grip feeling at the moment that the writer has the opportunity to experience.

The design of the rear camera cluster of Reno4 has not changed much, except that they are lightly coated with a luminescent layer, which will emit light blue light when in a dark space. In terms of hardware, except for the main lens upgraded to a 64MP sensor, the remaining cameras of Reno5 – 8MP wide-angle, 2MP macro, and 2MP font removal – all have the same parameters and layout as the Reno4 elder.

There is not too much to say about the front of Reno5 when the punch-hole screen design has become so popular because manufacturers have not found a better way. However, there is a remarkable detail that a single 44MP camera has replaced Reno4’s dual pill-shaped selfie camera cluster – perhaps Reno4’s wide-angle selfie feature is not used much by users as Oppo expected? But anyway, the perforated design is still less distracting, and the usable screen area is not cut to make room for a feature you don’t use.

The screen edges of Reno5 are all well-finished; there is no longer a situation where the plastic edges surrounding the screen protrude, causing strain when swiping like machines in the lower price segment. In general, the front design in this segment has reached its limit; we will have to wait until the companies find the next breakthrough ways.

Thanks to the use of AMOLED panels, Reno5 has an integrated fingerprint sensor under the screen, a solution that was once only available in the flagship segment is now popular in the mid-range segment. The speed and accuracy of the fingerprint sensor on Reno5 are both good, and you can customize the unlock effect in the device’s settings.

Oppo has optimized the position of the connection port and physical buttons since previous generations, so it is not surprising that Reno5 still inherits the characteristics from its seniors. Although thin and light, Reno5 still has a 3.5mm jack, dual sim-tray, and separate memory card.

Bringing 90Hz screens to more fans

After Oppo Reno4 Pro, Reno5 is the next smartphone in the Reno series equipped with a 90Hz screen. High refresh rate (and touch sampling rate) is a new trend pursued by manufacturers thanks to its smoother scrolling experience than 60Hz, and Oppo bringing this feature to the market more Reno series fans is a welcome thing.

In terms of hardware, Reno5 Pro is equipped with a 6.43-inch flat screen with a 90Hz AMOLED panel, 1080 x 2400 pixel resolution, protected by Gorilla Glass 3. With a maximum brightness of 600 nits, the outdoor display for Reno5 is a relatively simple job. Reno5’s default Vivid (Vivid) color mode reproduces colors true to the characteristics of AMOLED panels: vibrant colors, high saturation, wide contrast range. The viewing experience is very similar to Reno4 Pro, except that Reno5 is equipped with a flat-screen.

Integrated Dolby Atmos, but because it is only a single speaker, the quality of Reno5’s external speakers is not too outstanding. The volume is quite loud, not noticeable at the maximum level, but that’s it.

No configuration upgrade, but the software has many new points.

While the design has many novelties, the configuration of Reno5 is still “stomped” when equipped with Snapdragon 720G, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal memory. Snapdragon 720G is probably not a bad chip for daily basic needs like surfing the web, Facebook, or Youtube. Still, in the same price range, it is not difficult to find other smartphones with better configuration, equipment Snapdragon 730G, 750G, or even 765G.

It is not surprising that Reno5 achieved the same score as Reno4 in benchmarks and gaming tests with the same configuration. AnTuTu Benchmark of nearly 290 thousand points helps Reno5 play games like Arena of valor Mobile or Dead Trigger 2 smoothly at the highest graphics settings, while with PUBG, the “balanced” mode will give you an average fps of nearly 40. The Reno5’s 8GB of RAM, in general, is still too much for the multitasking needs of nearly every user.

Software is another story on Reno5 when this is one of the first Oppo devices to come pre-installed with Android 11 operating system, ColorOS 11.1 interface right out of the box. Some of the outstanding new features include the ability to customize the Always-on screen, FlexDrop to increase multitasking with small application windows, and Oppo Relax to help you relax with various white noise. Bloatware has also been significantly reduced, including only the iQIYI and Soloop video creation application; if you don’t need to use it, you can completely remove them.

The battery is “strength” and charges faster.

Accepting a slightly thicker and heavier machine, in exchange, Reno5 is upgraded to 4,310 Mah battery capacity compared to Reno4’s 4,015 mAh. Moreover, the maximum charging speed of Reno5 has also been raised to 50W, making this smartphone one of the fastest charging names sold genuine at the moment (Reno4 Pro is holding the leading position, Find X2 and Realme 7 Pro).

With the included 65W charger, according to the actual measurement of the writer, it takes 55 minutes to charge from 10% of the battery fully. Although not as good as Oppo announced to charge the battery in 48 minutes fully, this number is still very fast. And with the device owning an impressive battery life in BiaReview’s tests, in turn, playing games continuously for 7 hours and 9 minutes, surfing the web continuously for 11 hours and 36 minutes, and watching movies continuously for 20 hours and 4 minutes. It can be said that Oppo has done a good job in balancing machine design, battery capacity, and application optimization to bring long-term use.

Camera: many interesting software features for creative youth

The ability to take photos has always been one of the strengths of Oppo smartphones, and Reno5 is no exception. Besides the upgrades in hardware and sensors, the highlight of Reno5 is that Oppo also equips a series of interesting software features for users, especially young people, to be creative. In particular, the most notable is the fact that Reno5 is the first smartphone capable of recording double exposure video.

If you’re familiar with photography, double exposure isn’t a strange term, but Reno5 simplifies the process, just choosing a “dark deep” background and the subject “acting” on it. Along with the AI subject color retention feature that dates back to the Reno4 generation, double exposure video is significantly dependent on whether the camera can recognize the subject’s face. Oppo has fixed it or minimize its unrecognition or misidentification on the previous generation.

As usual, the Reno5’s 64MP main camera will take care of most of the everyday photography scene. In bright enough conditions, photos taken from the main camera create depth thanks to vivid color reproduction, flattering eyes, wide contrast range. The machine has a 108MP “super sharp” shooting mode, maybe by upscale, but you won’t notice the difference, like the high-resolution camera smartphones on the market.

With an aperture of F/1.7, Reno5 gives good low-light photos even in automatic mode, without too much noise. With the Night Mode night mode, the image is brighter, more details can be seen, but in return, there is a distinct area in the light sources; maybe this is a software error.

Portrait photos taken with the background removed in most cases are of good quality; the background is smooth, although some edges between the subject and the background still need improvement. However, because the camera does not crop in when shooting to remove fonts, you will have to hold the camera close to the subject to get the desired portrait angle.

Reno5’s wide-angle camera tends to push colors more brightly than the main camera, which is also quite reasonable because we will mainly use this lens to capture landscapes.

Unfortunately, the Reno5’s 2MP macro camera is still only “for fun,” the practicality is not high because the resolution is too low, and there is no autofocus feature, making it difficult to capture in focus. The color and detail of the photos are also not impressive.

The selfie camera is perhaps Oppo’s biggest pride, and the Reno5 is no exception. Whether it’s normal photography or deleting fonts, Reno5 gives beautiful photos, smooth and pink subject skin; the writer feels that the beauty feature is sometimes too much, so it depends much on individual preferences.

Summary

Overall, Reno5 is still a significant upgrade despite being born only five months after the elder Reno4. Oppo has found a way to improve almost every aspect from design, screen to battery or features, complementary, creative camera. More importantly, these improvements are brought about at an almost unchanged price compared to previous Reno generations. If you are not too concerned about performance for gaming needs, Reno5 is a mid-range smartphone that is worth buying.
