Design And Features

Picture Quality and Performance

Optoma has finally created a projector that is optimized for gaming, as it is fine-tuned for everything else. As mentioned, the UHD38’s headline feature – Enhanced Gaming Mode – is great with its lag-free versatility but doesn’t peak with 4K. When playing games with 4K/60Hz resolution, the UHD38 only delivers a 16ms response time (still better than most TVs) and it doesn’t have 4K/120Hz.

At 1080p/120Hz, the UHD38 managed 8.9ms and at 1080p/240Hz 4.2ms. These benchmarks apply to any preset you use, from Cinema to Game, Reference, and Bright. Well, a lot of these features are marketing details as most people won’t notice, and the fact that the UHD38 goes under 40ms is impressive enough.

Most importantly, the fast action sequences in games and movies look smooth enough, the camera angles don’t attract any judder, and there’s no trace of that awful old DLP – ‘the effect’ rainbow’. Overall, the UHD38 projector delivers pleasing images regardless of source and resolution.

When displaying 4K on a projector, you’re guaranteed an image of just under 8.3 megapixels. Still, images are sharp, detailed, and immersive. Colors remained vivid and well saturated from the projector’s eight-segment DLP color wheel – enough to make colorful games pop – although we did see both HDR and black levels have more impact on some high-end projectors.

On the UHD38, Gaming mode adds more fidelity to games while movies on 4K Blu-ray look satisfying if viewed in Cinema mode.

For all its excellent image quality – save for average black levels – it is a great projector for the home.
