amazon Pentax 645Z reviews
Highly elaborate structure and style
The design of the Pentax 645Z is a medium-format camera with a tunnel body, square chamber structure, huge and deep grip, full mechanical control system. Thirty controls: wheels, latches, keys … scattered far and wide across the body are sane, harmonious, and optimally manipulated. The newness of the instrumentation might even bring a bit of embarrassment, but soon familiarity with button position and function will let the user work quickly and efficiently.
The Pentax 645Z measures 15.5 x 11.7 x 12.2cm and weighs 1.55 kg with battery and body. Actually, the added weight of large and heavy lenses compatible with this medium format would determine around 2Kg if this 645Z camera were intended to be used in the field. This, in practice, is where the frustrating bulkiness becomes – if you like it or not – part of the existence of any medium-format camera. The limited shutter speed and heavy construction of the 645Z will prove to be difficult to operate while trying to meet the demands of photo shoots, dynamic shooting, or creative environments that apply a lot of movements.
The advantage of having a 3.2″ LCD mounted on two retractable latches, unlike some other medium-format, is beneficial to using it at many shooting angles. This can be hung on the neck, adjustable, and snapped from the ventral position, which is convenient and wear-resistant with large amounts of machine and lens. Flip openly and easily vulnerable.
Another such use of the rugged weatherproofing is tied into making the Pentax 645Z suitable for outdoor shooting in landscapes, architecture, and the like.
Quality of operation.
The sensor was a significant improvement that Ricoh brought to the Pentax 645Z and involved major changes in terms of design. From 40 MP, the resolution was bumped to 51. Meanwhile, the first-ever CMOS medium-format sensor with dimensions of 43.8 x 32.8 mm was made by Sony and introduced features formerly absent in medium-format cameras like Live View, High-speed video, or ISO up to 204,800. Comparatively, it is said that its sensor size of 43.8 x 32.8mm felt 1.7 times larger than that of a full frame (24 x 36mm). This means state-of-the-art dynamic range and the possibility for image computation, which includes smoothness and low noise (when shooting in the same technical conditions and context just before the lens). It is no accident that those fellow heroes Phase-1 and Phase-H of HP medium-format camera models sported the same sensor – they are two among the brands standing very high indeed on the list of serious camera manufacturers.
The camera takes support from the Prime III image processor to give continuous frame rates of 3fps and shutter speeds up to 1/4000s. Further capabilities of the machine are that it can shoot 14-bit compressed images in three formats: PEF, DNG, and TIFF. Videos at 60fps full HD can be recorded with the 645Z in addition to supporting 4K time-lapse video.
Of course, one could say that sensor is not enough to determine the performance of the Pentax 645Z. Those interested in medium-format cameras might be surprised to know that this camera has a focus system with 27 points (compared to 11 points for the 645D), 25 of which are cross points. Therefore, the Pentax 645Z is hardly inferior to some full-frame DSLRs in its focusing abilities. Faced recognition, a standard for most commercial cameras, becomes very handy while photographing people or models, all thanks to Ricoh. Focus Picking Focus function is very useful for manual focusing as well.

Ricoh has also put out a software suite aptly called IMAGE Transmitter 2 to aid studio work for the Pentax 645Z. The software allows real-time camera data access for viewing, selecting, and editing images while connected to a computer via USB. The interface of IMAGE Transmitter 2 is simple and user-friendly. Unfortunately, the 645Z lacks a built-in wi-fi for remote and flexible connectivity options and control.
Dust Alert is included in the list of features of the 645Z. When activated, it warns the user about dirt and dust by displaying corresponding messages on the LCD monitor, thus letting the user decide whether to activate Dust Remove II.
In summation, there is indeed a justification for the good quality of output from the Pentax 645Z. The dynamic range of the 645Z is unbelievably wide, traversing from highlights to areas of near black, all the way down to true black with amazing detail, smoothening picture noise, and even capable of withstanding an ISO rating of 6400. The picture is still clean and well photographed with less noise.
Overall Comment
The Pentax 645Z and the medium-format line of digital cameras are generally machines replete with features not intended for the needs of the majority of photographers. Nonetheless, this line of cameras caters to select areas such as commercial advertising, large format printing, or high-end imaging, requiring image quality that won’t satisfy even a full-frame camera.
Economically and technically, one is willing to admit that, in terms of image size and image quality, the 645Z is a digital SLR that stands on a full-frame machine. And much more cost is attached to that. Compared to other medium formats of the kind, the 645Z is 3-4 times cheaper. The Pentax 645Z is therefore the cheapest option for those photographers wishing to work on the full-frame class of medium format. This product line and pricing indicate Ricoh’s “off-the-shelf” development approach, which attributes some strength to it but, by design, has no intention of providing a sustainable line of full-frame products. The competition would be stiff in the global arena.
