What is Razer HyperSense?
Razer HyperSense is a new feature, introduced with the Razer Nari Ultimate, that integrates L5 haptic drivers in select gaming headsets to provide more accurate and dynamic haptic feedback to gamers.
Like other haptic solutions, Razer HyperSense converts audio signals into dynamic touch responses in real-time. However, Razer claims it’s a significant improvement over rival haptic feedback solutions that are limited by a narrow frequency range, monophonic reproduction, and often require a dedicated integrator to use with any software.
In contrast, Razer HyperSense enables stereo playback, wider frequency range, and real-time processing that requires no developer integration and works across multiple platforms.
What’s good about the Razer Nari Ultimate gaming headset?
At first glance, the Razer Nari Ultimate looks like every other pair of Razer gaming headsets. Specifically, the form factor here evokes the previous Man O’War lineup. Looking a little closer, however, the details paint a slightly different picture. The Nari Ultimate also boasts a Thresher-like hood, paired with wider Kraken-style ear tips.
These earrings contain another important, less prominent feature of Nari: cooling gel. This may sound a bit gimmicky as Hypersense haptic feedback does, but in reality, it makes rather bulky headphones look cool and comfortable.
The Razer Nari Ultimate captures many of the best parts of Razer’s other headsets, and the total of this bed is easy enough to see, wear, and enjoy. That said, I wish the volume and mute buttons were more friendly for their size. They are a bit small and annoying to find.
However, there is still a certain amount of flexibility to the Nari Ultimate that I quickly developed to appreciate. You can use them as wired or wireless headphones, though choosing the former reduces it to regular stereo output and disables the sound.
Speaking of Nari’s signature feature, Razer’s HyperSense technology does a pretty neat job – of giving you the right pitch for intensity. Even in mid-way settings, it can sometimes be a bit overwhelming or distracting if you’re listening to bass-heavy music.
When it comes to the in-game experience, the haptic feedback enabled by the Nari Ultimate adds a little punch to the sound effects that you won’t be able to get away with other headsets. It’s unique and different – even if I have a feeling that the feature won’t resonate with everyone and might also lose its novelty in the long run.
Likewise, I found that the THX spatial sound provided by the Razer Nari Ultimate also benefits multiplayer shooter experiences like Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and Overwatch. While the effect isn’t always noticeable, the ability to hear where the sound effect is coming from sometimes makes a major difference in the heat of the moment.
Another thing that I dig about Nari is just the breadth of customization available through Razer’s Synapse software. Pretty much every aspect of the audio experience here can be modified – and it’s quick, easy, and satisfying to do so. Razer hardware has always been exceptionally enhanced by their software, the Nari Ultimate is no different in this regard.
Some limitations of the Razer Nari Ultimate headset?
As noted above, in the right circumstances, the haptic feedback in Razer’s Nari headphones can be quite impressive to look at and experience. However, I often find that I will have to turn the volume on the headphones to the maximum to get the most out of this feature. At lower volumes, I felt almost nothing. The fact that you’re limited to eight hours of use per charge isn’t great either.
Then, in terms of communication, I found that using this headset garnered complaints from other players in Overwatch about the mic quality. These complaints come from my regular background, who have heard me cycle through a bunch of headphones in recent months with no issues – so the fact that it has popped up speaks for itself. It’s a shame, otherwise, I dig into the mic design on the Nari Ultimate. When not in use, you can slide it back inside the headset and adjust its position in just a moment.
Is Razer Nari Ultimate haptic feedback unique?
Given that the integration of Razer’s HyperSense technology is the big differentiator between the Nari and not only other gaming headsets but also Razer’s most stable, it’s no surprise that Razer is playing haptic feedback in the Nari. Ultimate as the main selling point for the product.
That being said, it should be noted that the Nari is far from the first gaming headset to promote haptic feedback in an attempt to enable deeper immersion. There are a few other, less mainstream brands that have tried this in the past. However, no one has come close to the level of polish that Razer’s implementation delivers – and in that sense, the Nari Ultimate is unique.
It feels like this headset thrives in places where others have quietly languished as it has no weird limitations and can be considered a quality gaming headset even before you bring effect on the image.
Should you buy the Razer Nari Ultimate Gaming Headset?
While the form factor leaves a bit to be desired and it’s quite expensive compared to the competition, the overall quality of the experience makes me more inclined to recommend the Razer Nari Ultimate gaming headset to those with a higher price tag.
Haptics here aren’t bad or hacked but they also never feel completely necessary. At times, the Razer Nari Ultimate feels less like a great haptic gaming headset and more of a great gaming headset with very well injected haptics.
