amazon Razer Nommo Pro reviews
Razer’s Nommo Pro speaker system is a clear step up from the company’s other Nommo models, both in terms of build and price. This $499.99 2.1-channel desktop speaker set is more than three times the price of the shoddy Nommo Chroma speaker set, but the extra money makes sense in terms of performance. While its biggest addition is the included subwoofer, the Nommo Pro’s satellite speakers are also significantly upgraded via separate tweeters that give the system some much-needed premium features. The result is a desktop speaker package that sounds much louder and better than its smaller siblings.
All details
Nommo Pro’s left and right satellites stand 11.5 inches tall, each with a pair of nearly horizontal black boxes mounted on a black dish-shaped stand. Larger, 5.2 x 6.7-inch (HW) canisters on each speaker house a 3-inch mid-range driver with plenty of room for resonance, while a smaller 2.2 x 6.7-inch top tube contains a 0.8-inch tweeter. The enclosures and driver base are solid, matte black metal surrounding the grille with fewer drivers. When turned on, the disc-shaped base RGB light rings light up with programmable color patterns and are invisible when not used.
The subwoofer is a 15.3 x 10.7-inch black drum with a 6-inch down-firing driver. A bass port sits on the top panel, providing space for all the air the driver replaces to move. The subwoofer’s cabinet-like drum rests on three short legs mounted on a disc-shaped base, lifting it enough to provide the driver with space to move. This base does not hide any colored light like the base of satellites.
A panel on the side of the subwoofer houses ports for the rest of the speaker system, making the subwoofer act as a wired hub. Each satellite has its multi-pin barrel connector, under which a wired control box is located. The optical audio port and USB-B port are located below the control pod connector, followed by the power button and connector for the power cable. Except for the laptop-like power cable, all cables are sturdy, thick, and wrapped in black braided fabric.
The command pod is a 2.4-inch wide black puck that serves as the controller of the Nommo Pro. The puck’s top holds a prominent power button inside an LED ring that shows the current volume level and audio input. The top half of the faceplate rotates freely, providing direct volume control. The puck’s base is fixed and has two 3.5mm ports: a headphone jack and an auxiliary audio input. A button between those ports cycles through the Nommo Pro’s four audio inputs (Aux, Bluetooth, Optical, and USB).
Connection and light
Nommo Pro is designed to work with PCs and Macs via USB, but the optical input makes the speaker system usable with a TV or any game console or media player with an optical output. Bluetooth is a welcome feature, and the 3.5mm functions as a backup, although the system is most reliable with fully digital audio sources.
Razer’s free Synapse software for Windows and OS X provides direct control over the speaker’s lighting and sound functions, including THX and Dolby sound enhancement features and adjustable EQ. Razer’s Nommo Pro app for Android and iOS X also offers sound and lighting controls, though EQ adjustments through the app are limited to presets, not custom settings.
The speakers have the same programmable color lighting as the Nommo Chroma and can be customized with all the same options via Razer Synapse software. Each satellite has 16 zones of light arranged in a ring around its headquarters, and each can be set to different colors and effects. Areas can flicker, dim and light at regular intervals, and transition through multiple colors. The lights aren’t too bright but produce a pleasant, colorful light that will add more than distract from your screen(s).
The light can also work with certain games through the Razer App.
Gaming performance
Overwatch sounds like thunder through the Nommo Pro, thanks to the subwoofer. Explosions threaten to shake walls, and gunfire delivers multiple punches while preserving the unique sound of each character’s weapon. Heroic dialogue and vocal taunts are evident through the explosive lows, thanks to separate tweeters on each satellite that provide a high-frequency response that the single driver on the Nommo Chroma does not can provide.
Fortnite also looks strong on Nommo Pro. While the music is more mellow than Overwatch’s epic score, individual gunfire sounds much more explosive in-game. The satellite midrange drivers give each pistol ring proper weight, with the subwoofer providing just a little bit of rumble to enhance the effect even further.
Oddly enough, the relatively mellow, not particularly competitive, or action-focused No Man’s Sky benefits greatly from the Nommo Pro’s overall strength. The sound of sci-fi tech is light and full, reminding me of the engine and console sounds from the Star Trek series. Amplifying with a jetpack or in your ship sounds punchy and exciting, and less prominent sounds like footsteps will have plenty of detail.
Music performance
The Razer Nommo Pro can also handle music, which is expected considering its rather hefty price tag. As expected, the system handled our bass test song, “Silent Shout” by The Knife, at maximum (and physically painful) volume without any distortion. Any of the bass synthesizers or drum beats.
After experimenting with different sound modes while playing Massive Attack’s “Teardrop,” I determined that the Music EQ setting was better for playing stereo music than the THX or Dolby modes. THX and Dolby audio processing can make the sound seem much bigger and more powerful, with some low-end sculpting bring out the subwoofer’s rumble. Still, that processing also dampens some of the high-frequency features that satellites can do. In Music mode, the more bass notes of non-bass instruments, along with vocals and vinyl scratches, the clearer. The beat-like drum beats are still present, but it’s balanced and doesn’t overpower the other parts of the mix.
Yes’ “Roundabout” shows the great balance the system can offer when it’s not trying to create a cinematic, processed experience with heavily enhanced bass. The string texture of the acoustic guitar and the struts at the beginning of the track are evident, while the electric bass strings have plenty of bass-mid sounds. There’s not enough in the track to turn the subwoofer off at modest volumes, so the satellites do all the lifting, and they cover the full range of the mix admirably. Vocals never take center stage on this track, but they sound clear and distinguishable from other mix elements even when sitting slightly in the back.
PC gaming speaker power
The Razer Nommo Pro is a powerful, engaging desktop speaker system that delivers plenty of low-pitched thunderous punch thanks to the subwoofer while also delivering better overall sound quality than the Nommo Chroma tweeters separately on stereo satellite. The result is a relatively expensive but great-sounding, player-centric audio system for your PC, with customizable lighting and enough bass to satisfy. It’s more for gamers than audiophiles, but if you remember to set the right sound modes, it should provide great music playback alongside gunshots and wall-shaking explosions. If you want a more premium, less gamer-focused experience, the Audioengine A5+ Wireless speakers are our favorite. If you want to spend less, the Creative Pebble speaker offers surprisingly solid sound for just $25.
