Design and wearing experience
Skullcandy Mod True Wireless has a very simple appearance and is not too sophisticated like many other competitors in the same segment. Every detail on the headset from the materials, exterior color to appearance is minimized. Skullcandy calls this design language Minimalism.
The headset has an outer shell made of plastic and is designed in an in-ear format to provide a sturdy wearing feeling as well as enhance passive sound insulation. The slim shape with soft rounded lines allows Mod True Wireless to fit comfortably in the listener’s ear cavity. You can go to the gym or exercise outdoors while listening to music without having to worry about the headphones falling out.
The most notable highlight on Skullcandy Mod True Wireless comes from the company’s signature skull logo embossed on the faceplate. Right below the logo will be a cluster of lights indicating the connection status of the headset. Each ear also has a built-in physical control button. Control operations will include:
- Press once on the left (or right) ear to stop/play music
- Press twice on the left ear to reduce the volume
- Press twice on the right ear to increase the volume
- Press once on the left ear and hold for about 1 second to listen to the previous song again
- Press once on the right ear and hold for about 1 second to skip to the next song
- Press twice on the left (or right) ear then hold for about 1 second to use the multi-point connection feature
- When there is an incoming call, press the left (or right) ear once to hear/end the call
Perhaps Skullcandy is still a bit conservative in integrating physical function buttons. Because the vast majority of other products in the same segment have switched to using touch buttons to increase convenience when controlling. Hopefully in the near future, Skullcandy will listen to users and improve this feature.
The charging box that comes with Skullcandy Mod True Wireless has a quite compact design and uses a folding opening and closing mechanism. Like the headset, the outer shell of the charging box is also made from plastic. All edges of the charging box are rounded to increase aesthetics. The charging box uses a Type-C charging port and is embossed with the brand logo on the front.
Outstanding features and technology
Contrary to its minimalist appearance, Skullcandy Mod True Wireless is integrated with many cool features such as:

Sound quality
When adjusting the EQ in default mode, the headphones have a very vibrant and powerful sound quality. The bass range on the Skullcandy Mod True Wireless possesses abundant volume and is heavily concentrated in the subbass section. Meanwhile, the midbass part has less bass, sounds quite warm and encroaches a bit on the low mid part.
Enjoy the song “Chloroform” performed by Phoenix. Possessing strength in the bass range helps Mod True Wireless reproduce the kick drum part in the music very well and realistically. In addition to being powerful, the kick drum also has good presence and does not obscure the detail of the vocals. The drum sound in the song “Trampoline” performed by the band Kero Kero Trampoline is strong and punchy, so the tempo of the music is accelerated rather than sluggish.
If previously the weakness of Skullcandy headphones was that the amount of bass was quite redundant and negatively affected the detail of the mid range, now this has gradually improved. Although the mid range on Mod True Wireless is a bit backward, it still has a certain foothold and is not completely overwhelmed by the other two sound ranges. The vocal part performed by Mod True Wireless sounds quite natural and mellow. The low mid part will be more focused, so the vocals will lean slightly towards the dark and warm direction.
Mod True Wireless has a light jingling treble sound, the amount of detail is just enough so it’s not too bright and rarely causes sibilance. Technically, the soundstage on the Skullcandy Mod True Wireless has an average soundstage, not too airy but not constricted on either side. The audio doesn’t really leave much of an impression.
Overall, compared to its predecessors, the Skullcandy Mod True Wireless has a better finish, the sound quality is more carefully cared for, the bass range sounds rich but still retains good detail in the mid and treble ranges. Clearly, Mod True Wireless is a serious competitor to tws headphones in the same price range such as FiiL CC Pro2 or Sony WF-C500.
