amazon SKULLCANDY RAIL reviews
It’s a completely new product, but Rail has made a strong impression with its transparent design and a series of modern technologies from Skullcandy.
In addition to launching products that are already familiar to users, Skullcandy recently launched a completely new True Wireless line, applying unique design elements and features called Skullcandy Rail.
The specialness of this pair of headphones is shown right in the outer case, when this pair of headphones has a very prominent red case.
Opening the box, we see a short USB Type-C charging cord, with the USB A part stylized and bearing the Skullcandy logo.
This year Skullcandy wants to reduce plastic waste, so the rubber cushions are placed right on the paper box instead of plastic bags. The white version comes with a corresponding transparent white cushion.
Both the headset and the charging box provide 42 hours of use, which is among the highest at the present time. There are still products that last up to 50 – 70 hours, but 42 hours is completely enough for us to use for a whole week if we listen to music for up to 6 hours every day.
As usual, Skullcandy pursues the design of True Wireless headphones with a tail. But just looking at the Rail and Smokin Buds, we can see that this style still has a different design, because the Rail has a tail connected to the headset and is also slightly curved and flat on the outside to create a feeling of comfort than Smokin Buds.
The special point in the design of the headset lies here: the inside of the Skullcandy Rail is made of clear plastic so we can see (somewhat) the components inside the ear. Perhaps the company has also decorated the components to make the headphones look more beautiful, with the speaker membrane painted orange and the battery having a blue piece. The company’s use of clear, but slightly translucent plastic, in my opinion, is a good idea and will look better than completely transparent plastic headphones.
In terms of durability, the Rail has an IP55 water and dust resistance standard, which means it can resist small dust and splashes of water but cannot be immersed underwater.
In addition to the transparent design, Skullcandy Rail is also a pair of headphones that invests a lot in auxiliary technology. When downloading the Skull-IQ application, we can adjust touch operations, turn on Stay Aware (listen to the environment), turn on and off the ability to connect multiple Multipoint Pairing devices, and find headphones with the Tile chip.
The two most prominent features are voice control and “Mimi” sound personalization. To control the headset with voice, we will say “Hey Skullcandy” plus a command such as turning on Spotify, taking a photo, increasing the volume, changing songs, and turning on the Stay Aware feature.
I have tried it in practice, and this feature is quite sensitive to recognize, almost just saying “Hey Skullcandy” makes the headphones immediately reduce the music and ‘listen’ to see what the user needs, and execute the command correctly.
The Mimi sound personalization feature is similar to a similar feature that has also appeared on Samsung or JBL headphones, giving users hearing tests to know where their strengths and weaknesses are to come up with a suitable EQ. This is a feature that many companies are equipping their products with, and will certainly be a widespread trend in the near future.
One feature that Skullcandy Rail unfortunately does not have is ANC active noise cancellation. Like the new generation In-ear pairs, the Rail has a reasonable design so it still provides good passive noise blocking ability, but adding ANC would also be an advantage.
Perhaps everyone has already ‘dimly’ guessed Rail’s sound quality, after all, this is a pair of headphones from Skullcandy. The headphones have a bass-like sound quality, boosting this range to play well Dance, Pop, Rap songs with lots of intense and vibrant drum sounds. However, as a high-end product, listening to Rail also has more ‘elaboration’ in each sound range than cheap products, such as Smokin Buds.
The darkest range in Rail’s sound quality is the bass range as mentioned, but Rail also has ‘measures’ to keep it from encroaching on other sound ranges. First, the Rail’s bass reaches the sub-bass more clearly than the Smokin Buds, creating more depth and ‘background rumbling’. Listen to the song Legends never die, the bass creates vibration, not just ‘circling around’ in the mid bass to create an uncomfortable feeling of ‘bloated’.
Next, the mid range is brightened a bit to separate it from the bass range. The Rail’s high-mid part reaches higher frequency ranges than the Smokin Buds, thereby ‘cutting’ through the thick bass layer and also thus expressing more fully the singer’s voices reaching the high register. This still cannot be called an outstanding mid range, because the ultimate goal of the Rail is to play exciting music, music with a lot of bass, but I assess that it is capable of playing mixed Vocal songs and light Ballads lightly 1 level better than Smokin Buds.
The pair of headphones is really interesting
As a dynamic brand, Skullcandy has no shortage of pairs of headphones that are different from their competitors. But the Rail really goes above and beyond to become one of the company’s most interesting products, from its transparent case design, up to 42 hours of use and its duo of voice control and personalization features sound. This pair of headphones would be perfect if equipped with ANC active noise cancellation, and perhaps this is also its biggest drawback – especially when EarFun products in the same price range are also equipped with this technology.
