SOMIC has been very hot lately with its first gamer TWS headset pair, the SOMIC GX501 pair. But that is not the case with the company forgetting its main customer: PC gamers who need a pair of over-ear headphones for home use. It is a space for SOMIC GS301 pair to fill. These are their new pair of gaming Over-ear headphones, with a really cheap price tag. What’s this good about these headphones, and what else does it need to upgrade to be even better?
These headphones belong to the Stincoo line up, which includes a pair of low and mid-range gaming headsets from SOMIC. Out of the box are still 3 very unique yellow, black and red colors that have never been changed.
The inside accessories are not much, including a user manual and a detachable microphone.
The outside is the cross pattern, and especially the inverted V-shaped strip above can change color, with 2 colors: white and red.
These are the control buttons of the headset, including the light on and off button, switching between music and gaming modes (2 sound modes, corresponding to the two lights as mentioned above), the microphone on and off button, and the ring rotates volume control. Previously, this control cluster was often converted into a separate cluster by SOMIC but now integrated with the ear for neat, less entanglement.
This microphone connects to headphones via a 3.5mm slot, easy to remove when not in use. At the bottom of the microphone, there is also a small LED to indicate whether the mic is on or not.
Talking about the build quality, being a cheap pair of headphones, the GS301 is made of slightly thin plastic, not too creaky, but we also feel that it is light and not as sturdy as the higher-range headphones.
The earcups are made quite thick, but the leatherette material plus it’s a bit stiff, so the ear cup hasn’t been held close to the user’s ear. This wearing way for the noise resistance is not high when I use headphones and can still hear typing noise and fan noise on the side. On the contrary, because the headset is lightened and has a thick cushion, it retains a comfortable feeling, does not cause need even after long use.
This is a headset for laptops and PCs so of course with USB ports, mobile gamers will have to find another pair of headphones if they want to use it with tablets and smartphones.
So how are these headphones sound quality? As mentioned above, SOMIC GS301 has 2 sound modes for listening to music and playing games / watching movies which can be quickly switched at a bit above cups. The difference between these two modes in fact is not too great, but still enough for us to recognize and each mode has its own strengths and weaknesses.
The general sound quality of this pair of headphones goes in a natural, simple direction, more like a pair of music headphones than ‘super magic’ like the previous generation SOMIC products. In my opinion, this is a good thing because as a gaming headset, surely GS301 will also have to take on the task of playing music, no matter how hardcore gamers must have a break!
One more surprising point is that the GS301 does not press too much on the bass range, when this range is just right, press and dissolve, not feeling uncomfortable, this is one of the most audible bass in the ear listening to gaming, easy to mix music. The most prominent feature of this pair of headphones is the mid-range, slightly light direction and has the most ‘prime’ position in the sound quality of GS301. This midrange is quite bright, a bit ‘electronic’ slightly, so I listen to dance songs like Close to the sun by TheFatRat very ‘good’.
So what about the treble sound, this is the interesting thing about this pair of headphones. In music mode, the treble can only be considered ‘just enough’, even in songs with a lot of hi-hats, it feels a bit gentle, can be higher. But when switching to a gaming mode, the treble band is the most changed band, pushed forward to stand next to the midrange, with increased brightness.
If you do not know, the treble is one of the biggest factors affecting the soundstage, so the change in the gaming mode makes the treble higher, the soundstage is also put more towards 2 cups, not more in the middle of the listener’s head. This type of sound when listening to music is a bit excess brightness, but certainly in the game will be beneficial because the sound space is more spacious. GS301’s gaming mode is in stark contrast to the Inear GX501 pair we learned the day before, when these headphones boost a lot in the bass range, while GS301 boosts the treble to make an effort to expand the soundstage, quite interesting.
There is still compromise, but not bad
As usual, the pair of low-cost headphones will inevitably make certain compromises, with GS301, we will have to accept a bit of the build problem, the ability to emulate surround sound will not be equal to more advanced products.
