amazon Exogal Comet reviews
With its unique philosophy and approach, Exogal products are not only unique in design but also offer impressive performance in price range.
DAC Comet is the debut of Exogal Audio, the American sound brand founded by legendary fours including Jim Kinne, Larry Jacoby, Jeff Haagenstad and Jan Larsen in 2013. They are also initiates and make the name Wadia Digital. With more than 20 years of experience in the hifi industry, the quartet has driven the Exogal brand to come up with innovative audio designs that are distinct from what is on the music market in the world.
Wadia can be considered as a monument of the US hi-end industry, especially for digital equipment. In the Vietnamese market and in the world, even old-fashioned Wadia CD / DAC players are still popular because of their sound quality as well as the design philosophy of being subtle, natural and rich in music. Even more audiophiles rated the performance of older models higher than the new after Wadia designs was sold to the Fine Sounds Group.
Jim Kinne and Larry Jacoby are co-founders of the Wadia brand. In particular, Larry is responsible for product design and administration, and Jim specializes in both hardware and software engineering. In addition, Larry Jacoby is also one of the founders of the company that manufactures anti-vibration accessories and shelves – Stillpoints. Jim Kinne has left a deep impression in the hi-end industry with a number of major awards and technologies that help streamline performance, contributing to the narrowing of the quality gap between digital and analog audio. In addition, the pioneering role in handling jitter, he is the first designer, who designs D / A decoupling and many digital advancements such as DigiMaster, ClockLink, SwiftCurrent. Among the products Wadia won the award and bold imprint of Jim Kinne. There are the Wadia 27 decoder, transport 270, power DAC 790, etc.
Design and structure
Analog to Digital (DAC) converter Exogal Comet is capable of handling up to 384kHz / 32-bit PCM, supporting DSD128 through USB connection. The maximum signal processing capacity of the three digtal connectors will be AES (192kHz / 32-bit), S / PDIF (192kHz / 32-bit), and Toslink optical port (96kHz / 32-bit). The Exogal Comet has three analog outputs, including RCA, XLR and a 6mm headphone connector. In addition to decoding, Comet also plays the role of a true preamp by integrating a 32-bit digital volume and a RCA input. In addition to the usual connections, the back of the machine has a pair of Exonet in / out ports with interfaces similar to HDMI, which is the connection between the Comet extension and the development of Exogal.
The first impression of Exogal Comet’s appearance is its solidity with the front and the sides delicate machined of aluminum milling. The back of the Comet is covered with a glossy black mica, engraved Exogal logo. The bottom of the machine is specially designed, lined by a steel plate pressed close to thick acrylic plastic. The acrylic and the tripods are designed in the form of marbles to form an anti-vibration platform and isolate the vibrations from the outside. The Exogal Comet has a minimalist face with only an LCD display in the middle, without any additional buttons. Comet control via the remote or using the app installed on iOS / Android mobile devices with Bluetooth connectivity. Exogal display is relatively low contrast, so it is difficult to read parameters from a distance of over 2m. An interesting gadget built into the back of the Exogal Comet is the 5V USB charging port for 2.1A, which charges both smartphones and tablets.
For DSD input signal, Comet converted to PCM standard (DSD64 transmits 176.4kHz, DSD128 transmits 352.8kHz). Exogal Comet allows you to choose from four different filter circuits: linear phase, two types of phase and phase filter. Output circuit, Comet uses Op-amp PCM 4140 for analog output and PCM 5155 for headphone output .
Experience the sound
We initially tested Exogal Comet with a power adapter and Kharma C3.2 speaker configuration, Bel 1001 Mk5 poweramp, Sim Moon P5 preamp, Nordost Quantum power supply.
Our first choice was Mua Thu Canh Nau, by Hong Hanh on the 16-bit / 44.1kHz CD. This is a jazz style song, with slow tempo, uncomplicated sound but preferring midrange. Vocalist Hong Hanh brings a lot of expressive shades, at ease, at heavy, requires the inspiration of the music player. The Comet’s music is a very “live” feeling, the voice of Hong Hanh is full of vitality, sweet warmth, clear stage sound between two speakers. The details of the singer’s expressions are detailed, making the distance between listeners and singers become closer.
Nowadays, the demand for music with headphones is growing. Not only meet the basic listening needs, high-end headphones are also produced by many manufacturers, accompanied by a variety of accessories. Exogal Comet does not stand out from the crowd by providing users with built-in DAC support.
A couple of years ago, finding a headamp for the AKG K701 was difficult, by the makers of the renowned audio equipment were not keen on the headphone market. So even though the price is not too high, the AKG K701 is still used as a reference headset to assess the power of multiple headphones. In the Comet test, even the earliest notes were able to evaluate Comet’s subdued K701. The AKG K701 is a lightweight, fast bass, headamp or noisy source that is easy to expose if it is loose or weak. Meanwhile, the DAC Comet helps the K701 perform at high dynamic range, with deep, deep sound, well suited to symphony orchestras. Unfortunately, we did not have time to experiment with some other headphones for further evaluation, but according to the subjective opinion, the output of the Comet headphone is quite good and it is worth the headphone to explore.
An overview of Exogal Comet’s performance reminds us of the sound of the legendary Wadia, a liberal, generous and honest style. With Exogal Comet, the advantage is enhanced by the new digital technology advantage as well as the powerful DSD sound source.
The sound equipment of each company will be different, each design will fit a certain taste. There are sound systems that perform very smooth, skin, feel like listening to music like honey. However, there are also true-to-life sound reproduction systems that perform a live performance with large stage feel like sitting in a theater, which is the DAC Exogal Comet.
