It will be difficult trying and struggling with the keys to getting you to unlock the front door. A smart lock provides convenience and functionality and helps prevent you from being locked out of your home. There are several different smart lock options to choose from these days. Lockly, the Lockly Secure Series makers, recently added a Pro version to its smart lock line. It offers more features than any other smart lock in the series.

The Lockly Secure Pro comes in either a latch or a latch version, and each comes in three different color choices: Satin nickel, Venetian bronze, or matte black. I tested the deadlock version of the Lockly Secure Pro smart lock in satin nickel to see how it performs. Here’s what I think:

What you got

The Lockly Secure Pro comes with a smart lock (separated into an inner assembly with the battery cover, the outer assembly, the mounting plate, and all the screws and adhesives required for mounting). It also comes with a new latch lock, key set, new door attack, door sensor, Wi-Fi hub, and an original code card for the lock.

The only thing you need to provide to install the lock is a Phillips head screwdriver. However, it can also help to have a drill nearby.

Easy to install yourself

If it’s convenient for you (you can do basic fixes around the house and install a basic lock or doorknob), then you can install Lockly Secure Pro. From start to finish, it took me three and a half hours to remove my old deadbolt, install the Lockly Secure Pro latch, install the door sensor, set up the Wi-Fi hub, code and program the home fingerprint the padlock.

The Lockly Pro latch lock has features like a latch extender to fit different-sized door setups. To secure the lock assembly in place, you can use the included adhesive or drill a hole through your door. Drilling isn’t necessary (as you can use adhesive instead), but it does provide more stability, and the kit comes with a measuring guide to make things a little easier.

One glitch I ran into during the installation was installing the new door strike (the piece of metal on the door bar that the deadbolt extends when you lock the door). It didn’t fit, but I was able to keep my old door in place, and the lock still worked great.

An attractive biometric course

That is an extremely attractive smart lock. The external touchscreen display is sleek, and the lock has a stylish overall look. The fingerprint reader is discreetly placed on the side of the lock. The Lockly Pro’s latch lock is huge, as it’s almost 8 inches tall and almost 3.5 inches wide. While the buckle is large and bulky compared to smaller options like the August Lock, the larger size doesn’t detract from the aesthetic.

Thanks to the included hub, I can control the lock via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The included door sensor is required to be compatible with Alexa or Google Home. It also gives me the ability to receive push notifications to my phone about the status of my door (when someone opens or closes it). I can look back in history in the app and find out exactly when my door was opened.

Fingerprint, keypad, keys, and voice control

When I unlocked the front door with my fingerprint, it made me feel like James Bond. The fingerprint sensor on the side of the lock stores up to 99 fingerprints; each user places their stored fingerprint on the sensor to unlock the door. If I don’t want to use my fingerprint, I can use the keyboard instead of entering my code.

The touch screen keypad changes the position of the numbers for added security. Therefore, if the code is Number 12345678, the positions on the keyboard will be different each time, so someone behind me won’t see my code based on where the numbers are. (Although Code 12345678 is probably the worst code and doesn’t need to be protected).

If you connect the Lockly Pro to Alexa or Google Home, you can use voice commands to do things like locking the door, check the door’s status, or unlock the door (if you generate a secure four-digit voice code). Deadbolt also comes with a physical key, which can serve as a backup. You slide the keyhole cover, then put your key in the keyhole.

Auto-lock and smart security features

I can set Lockly Pro to lock on the timer automatically. Initially, I set it to auto-lock after 30 seconds, but I don’t want to enter my fingerprint every time I take out the trash or go to the mailbox. So I changed the auto-lock time to five minutes, and I feel safe knowing I can’t forget to lock the front door because the Lockly Pro will eventually do it on its own.

Lockly Pro has many other security features. The capacitive fingerprint reader helps prevent raised prints, while the Pin Genie keyboard technology keeps the keypad codes visible to anyone.

Grant access to guests

For Airbnb hosts or anyone who regularly has guests visit their home, Lockly Pro has options for allowing temporary visitors to visit. You can set a temporary code, then send it to your guests with instructions. You can also set up an offline access token, which is generated with an encrypted set of numbers, and the offline code lasts for a period you set (one-time use, one hour, or up to 60 days). You can look in the app to check the lock status and see when your door was unlocked and how it was unlocked (fingerprint, code, manual key, etc.).

Some difficult features

Like most smart home products, Lockly Secure Pro is far from perfect. The fingerprint reader sometimes worked, requiring me to place my finger on the sensor just right for good reading. Sometimes, it doesn’t register if I keep my finger on the reader for too long or too little time. I have to lift and release my finger just right for it to work properly. If I enter my fingerprint incorrectly, I often have to use a code to unlock the door because the sensor won’t accept a retry immediately after the failed attempt. After a few days, I used the fingerprint sensor, and now I rarely have any problems using the fingerprint reader. However, it let me down a bit at first.

Of course, the door must be completely closed for the Lock to work properly. If the door even slightly deviates from the doorknob, the auto-lock feature will keep trying and re-locking several times (unsuccessfully), then the Lock will start beeping. Sure, it’s great that the Lock is telling me something is wrong, but even after I fixed it and closed the door completely, the Lock seemed to be working for a while after that.

The other minor complaints I have about Lockly Pro have to do with the app. Apps are a bit slow to connect to the Lock, and some features (like fingerprint entry) require a Bluetooth connection, while other apps (like Alexa and Google Home connections) use Wi-Fi. That requires me to switch back and forth between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in the app, which takes some time and could be a bit more streamlined.
