amazon Asus Zenfone 5z reviews
Design
The Zenfone 5Z uses the same design as the Zenfone 5, with metal frame material, double-sided glasses and copying details of the iPhone X such as the “rabbit ears” or the vertical camera cluster.
2018 is the year of “rabbit ears” explosion on the Android smartphone. Although every design copy of the iPhone X, each has a slight change to this detail. With the Zenfone 5Z, the lack of screen is quite small because it contains only speaker, light sensor and front camera. The left side of the screen is quite compact.
The Zenfone 5Z’s excellent level of finish is reflected in details such as the difference between the screen and the low fringe, so there is no ripple when gripping, the ports and gaps are crisply milled have extra details. The back of the glass with the familiar Zen symmetry is also a feature of the Zenfone.
Zenfone 5Z is a phone with good finishing, multi-section design copy iPhone X so there will be people like, who do not. Unfortunately, the design of the machine does not have a really different point, look to recognize it so it will slightly faint.
Screen and sound
The Zenfone 5Z’s screen is 6.2 inches in size, Full HD + resolution and IPS compliant. In terms of parameters, the resolution of the machine is lower than some high-end machines, but the experience is not much difference, because the pixel density of 402 PPI is enough to ensure sharp images.
With a maximum brightness of nearly 600 nits, the Zenfone 5Z is good for outdoor use. When viewed on a tilt, the screen does not suffer from high contrast but slightly pink, especially when viewed from below. The camera has a variety of color modes, in which the default mode for blazing colors, eye pleasing. The Zenfone 5Z also features a self-adjusting color scheme based on ambient light, similar to the TrueTone feature on the iPhone X.
In addition, if standard color is needed then the user can switch to standard mode. When using a dedicated device to measure the screen in this mode, resulting in a very low color deviation, not inferior to the top models such as the Apple iPhone X or Samsung Galaxy Note 9.
At a ratio of 18: 9, the screen can display full video on YouTube (usually 16: 9 aspect ratio) without being tucked into the rabbit ears. In most other applications, Asus also handles the software pretty well, very rarely the software displayed by the notch cover, only occasionally encountered in the status display “bubble” of Facebook Messenger. You can also turn off (turn black) the screen side of the rabbit ears, but so the upper border looks a bit thick.
The loudspeaker is a plus on this handset. The unit can output stereo sound by combining the speakerphone on the bottom and the speakerphone. While the volume of the two speakers is slightly different when turning the screen towards the user, the speakers are loud enough and impressive to enjoy movies, music or games. Thanks to its 3.5mm jack and headphones in the box, it’s much easier to use the Zenfone 5Z headphones than the headset cutters.
Performance
Zenfone 5Z is equipped with a nearly identical configuration for the current Android smartphone, with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal memory. Powerful configurations provide an experience that you can expect from a high-end machine, when it comes to meeting every task and application on the phone in a smoother manner.
The difference between the advanced and the midrange configurations is noticeable when compared to the Zenfone 5, using the Snapdragon 636. While ZenUI is pretty heavy on the Zenfone 5, which leads to normal use occasionally paused. Zenfone 5Z is no longer the phenomenon. In imaging applications, Zenfone 5 also occasionally gets stuck at snapshots, while Zenfone 5Z is always handled lightly.
The hardware is also very good at gaming. With games rated as Dead Trigger 2 or Warhammer: 40K, the machine responds lightly at the maximum frame rate. Online games can not make this phone difficult. When playing the game for more than 15 minutes, the machine heats up in the frame but not to the annoying level.
The only popular game that Zenfone 5Z does not reach 60fps is PUBG Mobile. But the reason is that the game is not really optimized, and other Android models with similar configuration is only 40fps like Zenfone 5Z. Using the Gamebench to track, the game set the highest graphics level is HDR, set the frame rate Ultra, the machine stable with 99% of the frame rate at 40fps.
In performance evaluation applications, the Zenfone 5Z scores are expected to match the configuration. Asus equips this phone with AI Boost feature, with the ability to automatically accelerate the device when needed such as when playing games, handling heavy tasks. However, in reality, I find that this feature does not make much difference except to help benchmark a bit higher.
Camera
The Zenfone 5Z’s camera hardware is the equivalent of the Zenfone 5, consisting of a dual camera unit with a 12MP main camera, focal lengths of 24mm and f / 1.8 focal lengths, and Sony Exmor IMX363 sensors. The focal length is 12mm, f / 2.2 aperture. The front of the camera is 8MP resolution, focal length is 24mm and f / 2.0 aperture.
In terms of shooting experience, the Zenfone 5Z has a fast shutter speed and shooting speed, not stuck as it does on the Zenfone 5. When auto HDR mode is turned on, the camera is also fast. However, when switching between two cameras, users still have to wait about half a second, not as fast as when choosing between different shooting modes.
On the software side, the machine has been optimized by AI Camera, users rarely have to adjust because the camera has to analyze the scene and choose the corresponding shooting mode. The AI Camera works best when shooting poorly, the camera automatically activates night mode for brighter images. Besides, the more powerful hardware also helps the Zenfone 5Z to add some movie modes such as slow motion 240 fps at Full HD resolution, or 4K 60 fps.
AI Camera actually makes capturing more simple. The most noticeable feature of this feature is that when shooting in very poor light conditions: you need to have night mode on Zenfone, but now it is just shooting and the camera will automatically activate night shots to make the image bright enough.
Picture quality, the feel of the Zenfone 5Z almost identical to the mid-range. The main camera for high-definition images, showing a lot of details and colors are brighter in the morning.
In low light conditions, the brightness priority should slow down the shutter speed, causing the detail to be sharper and also susceptible to shake and blur. The plus is that the machine is quite standard color, not as obscured as some devices in the dark.
Wide angle camera is a special point of Zenfone 5Z, because now apart from Asus, only LG (without genuine) is using a wide angle camera for smartphones. With a wider shooting angle, the camera helps to capture impressive images of landscapes and architecture. However, the quality of the secondary camera is not very good, the light range is not wide enough to take back light, the brightness is slightly poor if not turn on the HDR, and the lack of brightness is also bad.
Without a long focal length camera, the camera still has a portrait mode to remove the font. Screenshots of deleted fonts are of good quality, and are less likely to be misplaced if set to medium level erasure. Due to the average shooting focal length, the photo will have a pretty background, not to highlight people like most telephoto cameras.
Zenfone 5Z is more powerful, so the experience is smoother than Zenfone 5, but the picture quality is not that different. The camera is well-suited for landscape shots, but in this price range there are other smartphones with snapshot cameras.

Battery life
Zenfone’s battery is 3300 mAh, not high with the configuration of the machine. However, Zenfone 5Z surprised me when the battery life is not bad. With the 4G connection, Zenfone 5Z can reach up to 3 hours of brightness, enough to last more than half a day on a regular basis.
If you switch to using WiFi mostly and use 4G as an office-based option, I can use the computer all day with a 4-hour bright screen. So the actual battery life of the Zenfone 5Z is equivalent to Zenfone 5, which is sufficient for the whole day with the demand on average.
In the review of the standard battery of BiaReview, the results of the machine is quite good when considering the configuration. Specifically the machine has over 9 hours of movie watching, over 7 hours of surfing and nearly 4 hours of gaming.
Software
Zenfone 5Z uses ZenUI version 5 customizable software, based on Android 8.0. In this version, Asus has removed many features and applications, leaving only a few applications such as clocks, computers, the rest are Google applications. ZenUI adds a few options in settings, has its own battery management software and performance, and special features such as two social networking accounts.
However, ZenUI 5 has not completely eliminated unnecessary features. ZeniMoji, the copying feature of Animoji is unlikely to be used, and the quality is not good. The interface of the machine is still in the direction of many colors (though less than before), with rich subject matter.
The ZenUI version currently has two navigation options: three familiar virtual buttons on Android, or gesture navigation. The ZenUI gesture navigation does not copy the iPhone X, which combines the swipe gesture with the familiar 3-button swipe. Even so, the speed of response is not fast yet, so the feeling of using the gesture is not as smooth as the solution of Xiaomi or Oppo.
Asus is quite generous with AI for its features, but apart from AI Camera, I’m not that impressed with the other features. Increasing the battery life by adjusting the charge level, or automatically increasing the ring volume around noise is a great feature, but not everyone needs it. Nevertheless, they still depend on the habit of each person.
