amazon Doom Eternal reviews
Doom Eternal – In the modern game industry, there is rarely a phenomenon like Doom (2016).
It was the perfect reboot as the team at id Software understood why the first Doom games were immortal and brought it into a new era while still retaining the very “Doom” spirit. As well as opening the door to classic shooters with a “classic” feel like Dusk, the return of Blood, or a new formula like BPM: Bullets Per Minute
However, although the writer likes Doom (2016) very much, there is always a feeling that something is lacking about it, a feeling that the id Software team has come very close to perfection, but something is yet to come.
And Doom Eternal was announced, with a series of new features that made fans of the “classic” game series a little uneasy, but made the writer full of hope, because whether the additional features will push Doom. Eternal takes it to the next level, where does this age-old FPS series deserve?
Again, no need to be lengthy, Doom Eternal “throws” the player – still playing the role of the Doom Slayer guy, into the middle of hell, lifting the player’s spirit and reminding the player that: this is Doom!
After “training” again, Doom Eternal begins to introduce players to a series of new mechanics that make the game’s hysteria more fun than ever!
First, most of Doom’s (2016) original features will appear almost from the beginning to the player.
The guy Doom Slayer will always go like an arrow on the battlefield, not slowing down for anything.
Accuracy when moving and discharging bullets remains unchanged. Make the Doomslayer both a force of destruction, as delicate and precise as a Hunter in Destiny.
He can double-jump, kill weak enemies with a satisfying animation, and now he can even dash a quick dash…
Exactly, Doom Eternal now adds new movement mechanics that make the Doom Slayer increasingly flexible on the battlefield, making it easier for players to breathe when facing too many enemies firing bullets from all directions – specifically is surfing, and clinging to the wall.
The wall-grabbing mechanism only appears in the “platforming” segments, while surfing and swinging become a crucial part of combat, especially with the “arena” design like Doom, as well as opening rows of A series of new movement opportunities allow players to uncover the secrets of each level in a… less boring way.
Players will desperately need those new mechanics, as the enemies in Doom Eternal are more crowded, denser, and more dangerous than ever.
Very early on (even from the very first level!), players are placed in areas of dangerous hordes that require proficiency in “closer” and “rotating” gameplay. In the 2016 version to a new level, for example, Mancubus, floating Cacodemon spit, and… wait… Pain Elemental? Arachnotron???
The dangerous enemies from throughout the series are back.
The Pinky, Mancubus, Cacodemon … from the 2016 version still appear and are as powerful as before, but the new enemies are the brightest point of Doom Eternal.
From “familiar faces” like Arachnotron, Pain Elemental, Specter, Arch-Vile… reworked to fit Doom Eternal’s frantic gameplay loop, to brand new dangerous faces like Dread Knight, Doom Hunter, Blood Makyr… and of course the nightmare of many “newbies” (FPS rookie): Marauder.
While most of the demons from the 2016 patch are almost unchanged, it is these new faces that are the heart of Doom Eternal, when their presence will require intense concentration to come from the player.
The player will be forced to play around with them, engage in battle or logically retreat because of their extremely obvious effect on the battlefield.
For example, a Doom Hunter alone will cause the player to “die instantly” if it is out of sight because their skillsets deal a lot of damage, and you will have a hard time focusing entirely on them because of the “strong” and the sporadic monsters around will destroy you easily if you take too long to handle a Doom Hunter.
It’s not just the Doom Hunter that’s so dangerous, there’s the Arch-Vile with the ability to summon powered-up demons, the Whiplashes that moves at breakneck speed, the Pain Elementals that spit out the annoying Lost Souls, of course, the Marauder – the nightmare of FPS rookies, requires players to approach in a very specific way, or else you will have to start all over again with just a single mistake.
And even previous bosses like Cyber Demon will return as…. normal freak!
In general, the difficulty of Doom Eternal is greatly increased because of the larger number of monsters, more variety, and more coverage of the battlefield, although most of these monsters have a weak point for players to take advantage of disables, such as Arachnotron’s laser gun, or the two giant flamethrowers in Mancubus’ hands….
Enemies in Doom Eternal will truly become a real challenge for every FPS player.
However, don’t worry!
Not only are the enemies in the game so fiercely upgraded, but our Doom Slayer friend also has no shortage of tricks at hand to handle them! And of course, the gunplay of a game like Doom is free! With a heavier weight and feel than the new Wolfenstein games, the feel is as muscular as the Gears of War characters.
As mentioned above, the new movement mechanics will help players a lot, but the weapon changes and new features of the Praetor armor are the focus.
As before, most weapons in Doom Eternal will have two secondary fire modes (except for the BFG and Super Shotgun, of course), allowing players to quickly switch between them at the touch of a button, and upgrade with Weapon Points earned during gameplay.
Once you have upgraded enough of a certain secondary shooting mode, the game will require the player to complete a task-specific to that mode, thereby unlocking the “real” power of the weapon, making the customization in combat as well as higher replay value of the game.
These changes are mostly still faithful to Doom (2016), like the sights and missiles for the Heavy Assault Rifle, but the new changes are very… interesting, like the Shotgun, and the Plasma Rifle….
With the rest of the weapons, their most interesting change might be the Super Shotgun’s Meat Hook, which helps pull…. the player gets close to the enemy and unleashes a devastating Super Shotgun shot!
Not only that, but the grenade mechanism has also been improved, when players can now bomb… ice, and freeze enemies to be able to easily deal with enemies who are always moving at breakneck speed.
The rest of the game’s focus is on the Doom Slayer’s features.
What players should know, is that the Glory Kill mechanism for picking up ammo and health in Doom has been significantly changed.
Now, Glory Kill is only used to pick up health, what about armor?
Ammo now only drops when killing an enemy with a chainsaw, and armor drops when enemies are burned with a Flame Belch – a flamethrower mounted on the Doom Slayer’s shoulder.
These features further push the player to get closer to the enemy, requiring the player not only to make quick decisions but also to master the battlefield to be able to make quick and accurate decisions.
For example, Flame Belch will be used on stronger monsters to optimize armor, or carefully select the target so that you can use chainsaw / Glory Kill whenever you get stuck.
Not only that, normal melee attacks have now become much weaker, but players can completely “turn” them into a destructive punch with the Blood Punch mechanism.
These immediate and profound choices make Doom Eternal’s gameplay loop so much more engaging, making the moments when players near death and then rise to glory become frequent and more intense!
Doom Eternal takes players to more than just UAC’s Mars base and a few hellish levels like Doom (2016).
From snow-covered strongholds, an ancient demon city on Mars, to an Earth ravaged by demons… all of these locations look stunning, with a host of interesting details. Extra points for Doom’s plot, for the eternal war between the Night Sentinels and hell.
However, the arrangement of items and certain elements such as dropped ammunition of the game seem too… like the game, so the immersion element is somewhat lost.
Referring to that war, Doom Eternal has seriously approached its plot, although the story itself is somewhat blurred, the number of “fan-services” and world-building content of the game are many and Very interesting transmission!
Add a layer of context to the game instead of endless shooting.
Remember the secrets above?
They can now help players unlock weapon skins and outfits for Doom Slayer, even not just in multiplayer, but even in singleplayer and cutscenes!
The writer’s favorite outfit for Doom Slayer is the Marauder armor!
And mentioning Doom Eternal without mentioning Mick Gordon’s music would be remiss!
Again, with the metal rage and heroism, the writer has nothing else to comment on the soundtrack of Doom Eternal anymore!
