Little Town Hero – In countless major game lines in the world, Pokemon will probably still hold a unique position, because although the gaming industry has 40 years old, there is no phenomenon that has a strong global explosion like Pokemon.

And so, it is impossible not to mention Game Freak – the father of the legendary game series.

However, there is a rather interesting feature that so far, Game Freak has mostly dedicated to poisoning each Pokemon game line (with some spin-off titles taking the Pokemon theme).

Therefore, at E3 2018 when Nintendo announced a completely new product with the alias “Town” from Game Freak, many people expressed surprise at this strange change.

The idea of ”Town” will become a product “soaked” for a few more years before the opportunity is ripe, but this E3 2019 Nintendo has officially announced the full reputation of the game will be Little Town Hero.

Capital is considered a product to “heat” the game market, “pave the way” for a big storm called Pokemon Sword & Shield will be released after, many people do not appreciate Little Town Hero very much.

But the habit of truth often contradicts expectations, so does Little Town Hero fall into this category?

Let’s join Biareview to find the answer through the following review.

Little Town Hero takes players to a small, remote but peaceful town, completely separated from the rest of the world.

For some reason, the inhabitants of this place were forbidden to leave the palace’s protection, with the threat that the world out there was full of scary monsters!

However, that only makes our main character, a curious young boy “not afraid of anything”, wanting to “cross the fence” to adventure in new horizons.

With such a background, it’s no wonder that most of the time in Little Town Hero, players will run around in this small town, interact with interesting NPCs, do little quests … say in short, it’s a standard “rib” of all J-RPG games.

However, the peaceful days here were soon broken by the appearance of ferocious monsters – things that seemed to exist only in fairy tales and to scare the children from crying at night.

And so, our heroic boy and his “comrades”, will become the savior of this chaotic society, fighting against monsters with as many “monstrous” methods as possible.

Roughly speaking, a battle in Little Town Hero will be divided into turns, with each turn consists of two phases: fighting and… running.

Specifically, before entering each turn, both the main character and the enemy will “have” several “ideas”, divided into three categories: red is a pure attack, yellow is defense, and blue is versatile (buff, cast, assist…).

Players will have an “energy” indicator bar to turn these ideas into reality (similar to the way Clash Royale accumulates energy to call units out).

Every red/yellow idea has both attack and defense stats, and the player will come up with his or her idea to “counter” the enemy’s idea.

If the power of his idea is greater than the strength of the enemy, the player can “Break” (destroy) the enemy’s idea.

During each turn, when the player “Break” all of the enemy’s ideas, they will fall into a state of “All Break” loopholes.

At this point, if the player has redundant ideas, they can hit the enemy’s blood.

If you run out of red ideas, players will get bonus BP points – a form of units used to “reuse” or change ideas from a “stock” of ideas.

At the end of each turn, the player will be able to change their battle location – which is displayed from a top-down perspective.

At this time, the terrain like towns or deserts will become a form of the chessboard, and how many squares you can go depends on the outcome of the player’s dice shake.

When the player moves to a new square, the next fight will continue.

The interesting part is that if the tile has allies like friends or villagers, they can assist the character in a variety of ways, such as providing new ideas or harassing enemies.

In short, you can imagine the fighting mechanism in Little Town Hero is like a TCG (Trading Card Game), in which the “warehouse” of ideas is the Deck, ideas appear randomly in the one turn is a “hand” drawn from the deck, and they need the “cost” to “summon” ideas, and red/yellow ideas are monsters with attack/ defense stats, and the green idea is a trap/spell card to assist.

Until now, Pokemon games have always been “sticking” on Nintendo’s handheld systems such as Gameboy, NDS, 3DS … so the “graphics” part is not paid much attention.

Therefore, Game Freak has never been appreciated for its graphics-making ability.

However, at present, when the Nintendo Switch is “dominating the market” with a fairly strong configuration, its exclusive products also raise the quality of graphics significantly.

The strength of Game Freak and its adaptability to new platforms has been demonstrated through the Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu / Eevee version released at the end of 2018.

Therefore, with Little Town Hero, Game Freak also properly invested in this interesting game – at least put it on a 3D “suit” somewhere properly.

Little Town Hero chooses a style of rendering quite interesting graphics when everything in the game is fully modeled in 3D.

However, instead of following the realism that is quite popular in the gaming industry, Little Town Hero chose to show off the color of cel-shading style.

This tactic both makes the game feel as new as a 2D painting, but multidimensionally changes every time the camera is turned – not to mention that the game size will be significantly lighter.

That said, it does not mean that the Little Town Hero’s graphics are poor, but to coordinate with this drawing style, the gameplay in the game has been researched and optimized as much as possible.

Models of houses, rocks, trees … are designed to fit, not too cumbersome in terms of details, but neither can be called too monotonous.

The color scheme of Little Town Hero is even more unique, when using the original color, but still keeping the harmony.

In terms of character creation, there is a bit … wrongly, the NPCs proved to be more unique and interesting than the main character.

The writer was especially impressed with… the mother of the main character, which was shaped very youthful and… fierce, but still did not lose the mother’s love for her child.

The types of monsters in Little Town Hero are not many, but most of them are in the form of “boss”, so of course they are invested very well and monumentally!

There is no denying that Little Town Hero has created a very interesting combat system that is both new and exciting, and very tactical – but the game accidentally creates some inadequacies.

The most obvious thing is that in the animation before, during, and after each battle, the movements of the characters and enemies are shown quite cumbersome and slow, while they are not diverse.

If Little Town Hero is a pure card game, the slow tempo of the game is completely acceptable, considering the nature of the card game is about reading effects, activating, and sequential processing.

Little Town Hero, however, chooses a way of playing very closely with the traditional J-RPG style, with familiar attack/defense/item use commands.

So the fact that the game has a very slow pace makes things unnecessarily stagnant and boring.

A match in Little Town Hero usually takes place for a very long time, from about 8 to 15 turns, which means it lasts from 10 to 30 minutes depending on the changes.

If only in terms of mechanics, tactics, and handling order, the stretching that size is not a big deal, if the player can “skip” through the unnecessary crap display.

However, with Little Town Hero, that option is not available, so players will have to watch the monsters scratch dance before they come up with ideas.

After all, although classified in the genre of role-playing games, in essence, the characters in Little Town Hero have no level, equipment, or skill system at all.

The more you go into the game, the only thing that is “strong” is the “warehouse” of the character’s ideas – which already exist as a “deck of cards”, that is, operating on a “risky” mechanism.

In essence, the actions or tactics of Little Town Hero in the early game or the end of the game are not much different, whether later on, players will get better and better ideas.
