Lost in Random: In recent times, the gaming community must have heard of a program called EA Originals. That is a program created by game company EA to bring unique game experiences to gamers through independent developers.
Games have been released through this program, such as It Takes Two, Sea of Solitude, Unravel, A Way Out, and Fe.
The latest product of this program is Lost in Random, a game developed by Zoink Games, a company based in Sweden.
That is an adventure, action, puzzle game with RPG elements for PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Series X/S.
In the Kingdom of Random, when a child reaches the age of 12, the Queen will make them roll a dice to determine which of the six realms they will spend the rest of their lives.
Each realm is named after the face of a dice, from one to six, and the greater the number of realms. The better life will be in that realm. Commoners are not allowed to move freely between realms, so that child’s future is permanently fixed once the dice have been rolled.
The fairy tale of Lost in Random revolves around two sisters: Even, the game’s protagonist, and Odd, her older sister. They both grew up in a drab town called Onecroft, where the grown-ups had to spend their days sorting trash from the rest of the Kingdom.
When Odd turned 12 years old, she “hit the jackpot” and hit the number six; this means that Odd will spend the rest of her life in Sixtopia – the realm of the highest life.
Sixtopia is known as a paradise, and here Odd will live with the Queen. Even was quite sad that he would never see his older sister again.
Time passes and Even begins to have strange dreams, leading her to think that maybe Odd isn’t living a lavish life. So Even decided to pick up her slingshot and set out on a journey to save her sister.
Even is an 11-year-old girl and her only weapon is a slingshot used to shoot small pebbles. Under normal circumstances, she wouldn’t be able to deal with large enemies on her way to find her sister.
If you are a fan of the RPG genre, many people will think, “Ah, now is the time to fight weak monsters to earn money and level up, buy better weapons,” but Lost in Random chose a different direction.
The uniqueness of Lost in Random comes from Dicey, a live die that Even meets on his journey.
When battles begin, Even will use a slingshot to shoot weak points in the enemy’s body; these weak points do no damage. Instead, they will release blue crystals.
Dicey will collect these crystals for energy, and when full, Even will roll the dice with Dicey. The value Even receives – from 1 to 6 – will be used to draw battle cards.
For example, if Dicey lands a 2, Even will be able to use 2 points to draw a bow card – which turns the baby slingshot into a powerful weapon – or a sword card – allowing Even to use a sword made of energy for close combat with enemies.
By combining different cards, players can create some powerful combos. However, this also depends on luck, which means that there will also be times when players have to dodge attacks continuously until they draw a stronger card.
The funniest element of Lost in Random’s battle mechanics is building decks of cards to create your style of play. Small changes to the deck can make a big difference to how the battle plays out.
Once players start to find cards that work well together, the fight gets chaotic and exciting. New cards can be obtained through quests or purchased at the stalls.
The story of Lost in Random is themed around fear, loss, and hope, and determination. The story of the game is simple but will settle in the player’s mind.
The interior of the characters is built very realistically. In the game’s story, Even goes through a series of emotions as she realizes that overthrowing the Queen’s rule is futile.
Though Even was filled with courage, Lost in Random never forgot that she was only 11 years old. Voice actress Katey Parr deserves to be commended for her excellent portrayal of the sadness and fear of an 11-year-old girl, no longer brave and hopeless, just a homesick child.
Combining the game’s story with the “Claymation” style of character design (have you seen the famous Coraline cartoon by LAIKA studio?), Lost in Random makes the writer feel like “play” animated films with the sound of the “weird” director, Tim Burton, the illustrious!
With action-adventure games with a puzzle element, flexibility in the way the character moves is essential. That is an important thing because the flexible movement will make the combat and puzzle segments more interesting.
Unfortunately, Lost in Random did not do this well.
Even’s movements are quite heavy and somewhat slow. The game does give us a button to run, but the speed increase is not significant. Sometimes the writer forgets that he has used that button.
Finally, it’s Lost in Random with no jump button. Most of the time, Even’s feet will be glued to the ground. She will occasionally jump from high to low via the game’s command button, but jumping to a higher level will not.
That is the most unfortunate thing because the jump button is not only a tool that allows developers to create more complex puzzles, it will also make the fight scenes more exciting.
The battle mechanism of Lost in Random is really interesting, but the battle process of the game still has some unfortunate limitations.
The first factor is the visual and sound effects when Even launching an attack that is not well executed.
When holding a sword to cut enemies, the writer does not feel that he is holding a sharp weapon. Instead, the writer feels like he is holding a blunt stick hitting a rock. The game’s other melee weapon – the sledgehammer – has the same problem.
Another problem that makes combat not done is in bow weapons. Unlike the game’s melee weapons (sword and sledgehammer) that allow the player to use multiple weak combos or a slow but powerful attack, the bow has only one attack: to shoot an arrow at an enemy.
If the bow weapon also has an attack method that requires the player to “grind” like a sword or hammer, this will become more useful and help the combat array be more diverse.
