This laptop can be considered as a variation from the GS65 Stealth Thin model, with a familiar design and decoration lines: thin and light body, compact size, ultra-thin screen border, suitable for all needs to work, entertain, and move a lot.

With the launch of WS65, MSI also introduced a new logo template for its workstation. We no longer see MSI’s familiar cactus logo, which is a telltale sign for products specialized for gamers. In return, we have here a logo with a modern, elegant design, with its nature, not too prominent but still impressive enough for the viewer.

As mentioned, the machine looks 99.99% like its brother GS65, from appearance to connectivity ports.

So I will not go too deep into the details, but mainly the actual feelings, some general performance evaluations, as well as checking the heat dissipation in the machine.

Regarding the actual feeling, the first point I see is that the perfection of the WS65 has not been improved, still suffers from some of the same conditions as the GS65: that is when you press and rest your hands on the lid, the frame key will hear a slight creaking sound and when pressing hard on the keys, there is flex phenomenon.

I still hope MSI will be more complete in the official version because, in my opinion, GS65 and WS65 are dedicated and invested products of the company.

The second is about the keyboard, it still has a familiar layout and font, but this WS65 is not equipped with a Steelseries keyboard, and there is no RGB Led, only white LED background with 4 brightness levels. Anyway, this is also a product line for work, so it is understandable to reduce the RGB color.

The typing feeling is quite good, the bounce is good, and the response is fast.

The touchpad is smooth, and easy to operate, the difference is that the WS65 is integrated with a fingerprint sensor on the touchpad, you can quickly log in with your fingerprint via Windows Hello, and this makes the device more secure.

Next is the screen, we have here a 15.6-inch screen, Full HD resolution, IPS-Level panel, no G-Sync, etc. but the refresh rate is only 60Hz, not 144Hz again.

According to some information I tracked on the web, in the official version, the screen of the WS65 will have 100% sRGB color coverage, hopefully, the experience will be as good as the GS65, and improved screen brightness.

In terms of entertainment, specifically the speakers, on the upper part, near the air intakes, there are beautiful textures, the words Dynaudio are not seen anymore, so it is not clear if this product is equipped with the system.

The speakers of the device are still placed on both sides of the bottom edge of the machine, similar to the GS65.

Through opening some music, watching youtube, watching movies, etc., I found the speaker quality to be quite good, although a bit timid when turning up the volume to the highest, generally good entertainment if you don’t have high requirements.

Configuration of the machine, and performance evaluation experiences

Now let’s see how a thin and light workstation like this is, equipped with configuration.

In this sample of WS65, we have the 8th generation intel core i7 chip: i7-8750H, 6 cores 12 threads, accompanied by Nvidia Quadro P3200 6GB graphics card. The highest option for this machine, according to the manufacturer, is the i9-8950HK chip and the Quadro 4200 graphics card.

Next in the machine, we will have 32GB of DDR4 Ram with 2666Mhz bus speed, 2 256GB NVMe PCIe SSDs running in parallel Super Raid. It can be seen that the configuration of the WS65 is quite similar to the GS65, so in terms of performance, the machine responds very well and very quickly to office work, entertainment, and web surfing,…

Combined with the power of the Quadro P3200 card, this is a high-end laptop graphics card with a Pascal-architecture GP104 GPU, has 1792 CUDA cores, and the default clock rate of 1228MHz can boost up to 1468MHz. The graphics memory included with the Quadro P3200 is 6 GB GDDR5 with 192-bit memory bus width. Compared to the Quadro P3000, the P3200 has more CUDA cores and a higher clock speed, similar to the P3000, the P3200 has a TDP (Thermal Design Power) of 75W.

Gaming

To further test the performance of this machine, especially the Quadro P3200 card, I also tried many games such as CS: GO, Overwatch, etc. The FPS level achieved at High graphics settings in CS games: GO is very high, although this is just a not-heavy online game, I have to say that I am extremely surprised at such a peak fps: the highest is 250 – 260 FPS, the average is 160-180 FPS.

It must be said that it is quite good for light and moderate entertainment needs.

Although this is a workstation model, the durability of the machine and components will have to be better than regular laptop models. However, I do not encourage you to play games for a long time, on a thin and light laptop like this MSI WS65. Because the machine configuration and the technology inside, are not optimized for gaming, will not bring a really good experience like on gaming laptops.

Radiators

As for the heatsink, I can’t open the lid, but I think the dissipation system is similar to the GS65 (3 fans, 4 copper heat pipes).

Since this is a sample version, I did not set too high a requirement for the WS65, just stress testing it through FurMark, after 10 minutes, I recorded the CPU temperature as 90 degrees Celsius, and the GPU as 77 degrees Celsius.

With such a thin and light machine with such high performance, the temperature in the scores is completely acceptable. Touching sensitive areas makes the device very hot during the stress test.
