Design
SONY MDR XB550AP is a pair of On-ear but a bit bigger than the ZX100 quite a lot. However, the headset is still foldable so it is still quite compact. One of the earliest features of this ear is the material that the ear canal is used for. It is still plastic, but it is rough, very handy. Moreover, plastic resin has the advantage of having no fingerprints and dirt, less scratch than plastic.
Ear cushions and headrests are imitation leather. The thick padded head should be comfortable on the ears, the skin that the company uses is not quite soft and somewhat like synthetic resins, so the heat is compared to real skin but not too heavy perspiration.
The headphones are flattened as well as have pretty distinctive grooves on the headphones from Sony. On the cord there is a talk microphone with a middle button that can be used to choose the song.
Sound
The Sony XB is one of the lines that holds the V-shape perfectly for bass, while the other major players, ATH and Sennheiser, still have a more modern sound, but the overall balance is more balanced to a more subtle substance. MRD XB550AP is not an exception, the sound quality of the headphones really does not mix, can only be the eXtra bass line.
The bass of the headphones is especially made, even when playing with light music. The first time I heard the XB550AP was with a slow song from Alison Krauss, but the headphones still can show the bass balance through the lightest drums. With the BarbiBass, the XB550AP for sub bass, heavy weight and thunder, is very prominent. The sub bass is not sure, too much control, so spread to the sides of the ear, stick to the background a little bit of air. This section does not turn off fast but has a long tail extension that makes the rumble very strong. If you like sub bass, you will like it, the background is slightly dark because of this part but it does not matter if you like this sound. The mid-bass also does not reduce the volume a bit, the power is still very much so that punchy feel good. This bass will of course encroach on the other strings, but the balanced sound is not Sony’s goal to make the eXtra bass line, it’s made for Dance, Pop sound, bass for bassheads.
There is such a heavy bass, so of course the XB550AP must also be back down a bit. But compared to other V-shape ears, the mid-section is still quite prominent. Mid focus is in mid mid and low mid rather than high mid. Of course the earpiece will rarely occur sib phenomenon, when mixed with dark sources, this is almost non-occurrence. In general this mid section does not have many impressive points, but also so it is quite easy to listen and not difficult to coordinate. With vocal music, the middle part of the XB550AP needs to go a little further, but overall it’s still fine with good detail. But this mid section is a little more pop. Let’s try with Michael Jackson’s Beat It, the XB550AP plays the Pop King in a lightweight, easy-to-read style that blends seamlessly with the background music. Mid is more vocal, should play the Pop sound to feel the bar and speed faster than the headphones hit the air. The mid-range is also affected by the source, so users can mix to match their music.
The treble of the headphones is also slightly raised to match the V-shape of the headphones. The amount of treble is quite moderate, but the game is also pushed to create a highlight. The pitchers in Specter from Alan Walker are energy-rich although they do not reach the highest notes. This part of the treble also contributed to dance tracks like Specter not being dark, having better speed without feeling sluggish.
A slight weakness of the XB550AP is that it is slightly closed, not open. This is also a common weakness of on-ear earphones. This too-extensive sound field is also partially compensated for by the ability to arrange sound in a fairly sound space. Heavy bass, many, but not cover all the other bands so with a listener, this sound is enough.
