8 tips to increase the battery life of your Android phone

Several factors contribute to the decrease in battery life on your Android phone. Thinner bodies, brighter screens, faster processors, more platform software, and faster internet connections all come at a cost to your phone’s battery; that’s why battery cases and portable batteries come at a cost that has become popular.

With Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Google added the Doze feature, which puts the phone to sleep when sitting on a table except for urgent notifications (like text messages) and occasional syncing. This battery optimization is meant to boost your phone automatically, but you can do a few other things to improve battery life.

Since this is Android, the options for enabling these services will vary by handset, but a quick search in the settings will bring them up.

Turn on power-saving mode.

Do you think you will be stuck in a situation where you need your phone battery to last longer than usual? Switch your phone to power-saving mode, automatically cutting down on functions that can drain your battery.

You can prevent your phone from using mobile data by turning off the mobile data service from the quick settings panel on your phone. You can also use Airplane Mode to turn off all data network features and enable Wi-Fi, although this will disrupt incoming calls and SMS messages.

Let the rest follow the activity.

Features like Bluetooth, NFC, Samsung phone visibility, and location services are useful but drain the battery when your phone pings to connect and update. If you’re looking to preserve juices, turn them off until you need them.

You also may not need your voice assistant program all the time. If you have Google Assistant up and running, go into Assistant settings and turn it off, this will prevent Google Assistant from actively listening and using up the battery.

If you have a Samsung device, you can also turn off the Bixby voice assistant feature with the company’s Android phones.

Your screen is too bright.

Smartphone screens look great these days, but the battery is a sharp resolution and nice pixels, unsurprisingly. You may not need your device turned on to the highest setting. Go into your display settings and reduce the brightness on the screen.

It would help if you also considered turning off auto-brightness, which adjusts based on your perceived needs but can also raise your screen’s brightness higher than necessary.

You can also change how long your screen stays active. In your phone’s display settings, could you set it to black after a few seconds? And go into notification settings to turn off notifications from specific apps, so your phone doesn’t light up every time there’s a new alert.

Review wallpapers and Widgets

While widgets are attractive and convenient, they’re essentially an activity program that can be used right from your home screen, so your phone uses energy to keep it running. Just say no to these little guys if battery life is an issue.

Silence your phone

A phone that keeps beeping and buzzing with annoying notifications and waste battery, so turn it off.

Your phone has to activate an internal motor to buzz, which you guessed used up energy. Go into the sound and vibration settings and reduce the intensity of the vibration. You can also turn off haptic feedback here so it doesn’t vibrate when you type or tap the screen.

That said, app updates can be huge, eating into data and battery life. So it might be a good idea to limit app (and OS) updates when you’re on Wi-Fi. Turn off automatic updates temporarily until you can reboot.

Similarly, you can also choose to turn off automatic updates inside apps. Perhaps your Instagram app will automatically refresh with new content as it becomes available. That was great for keeping up with friends’ selfies and vacation stories, but now everyone is so tired! In your phone’s settings, you can turn off the option to automatically sync data and manually update those apps as you use them to save some battery life.

Meanwhile, keep an eye out for ad-supported apps that seem to be draining the battery. As BuzzFeed reported in March, ad scams can hijack in-app ads to run videos in the background. You won’t watch these videos, but they will register as advertiser broadcasts, meaning they’re tricked into paying when your battery reaches zero. So it’s a good idea to periodically check which apps are running waste your battery fastest to see if there are any outliers you can remove.

Ask a third-party app.

If all of this is too much to remember, a service like If This Then That (IFTTT) that supports automated workflows can help you save battery. For example, use IFTTT to turn off services like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth based on your location or disable specific services when your battery drops to a certain percentage.

Meanwhile, apps like Greenify will analyze the apps on your phone and determine which ones are potentially draining your battery life. It can then put inactive apps considered to have hibernation problems, ensuring that your phone’s battery runs as smoothly as the day you had the device.
