What does phone insurance cover

Mobile phone insurance is financial protection for your smartphone.

It is there to cover the cost of repairing or replacing your handset if it is damaged, stolen, or lost.

It isn’t compulsory, but it could give you piece of mind if you have bought an expensive phone over a long-term contract – a contract you’ll have to keep paying, even if you no longer have the phone.

Before taking out specialist mobile phone insurance, check that you aren’t already covered through your home insurance, travel insurance, a packaged bank account, a premium credit card.

Some of these products cover your device as standard, or you might be able to add it as an extra.

A standard mobile phone insurance policy may include cover for theft, loss, mechanical breakdown, and accidental damage.

That means if you have unintentionally cracked your screen, your insurer will pay for repairs or replacement. In addition, some insurers will give you an ‘instant’ replacement phone or repair yours if it’s out of action.

You might also have protection for:

Water damage: If your device is accidentally damaged by dropping it in the toilet or putting it in the washing machine with your clothes.

Multi/Family phone cover: Insures several devices within one household under one policy. Some insurers may not include cover for children’s devices.

Worldwide travel cover: Covers gadgets for damage or loss while abroad for a limited number of days.

Instant cover: Some policies include a 14-day exclusion that hinders your ability to claim during the first two weeks of your policy. With instant cover, you can make a claim the same day the policy is bought.

Accessories: Replacement of up to £150 of any damaged, lost, or stolen accessories simultaneously as the device.

Downloads and apps: Digital download cover will help with the cost of replacing music, movies, eBooks, and other valuable data that is stored on your phone. You can minimize the risks to your data by backing it up regularly.

Fraud: Repayment of costs incurred due to unauthorized calls or eWallet payments.
