Kinera is known to the audio community as an emerging Chinese company specializing in popular IEM headphones. But very few people understand that the company produces its BA Drivers and produces drivers for military use. Although it has just started making IEM headphones in 2016, Kinera has been researching for a long time.

Kinera Freya is a hybrid IEM headset with a combination of 1 dynamic driver and 3 BA drivers. A lot of today’s IEM headsets use asymmetrical 5-driver designs, but Kinera must have its reason for using only four drivers.

Starting with the bass range is taken care of by a dynamic driver with a diameter of 7mm. Kinera Freya mid-range uses 2 BA drivers from Knowles. And in the high range, Kinera Freya uses a self-developed BA driver.

Kinera Freya has a box style like a hexagonal cake box. The outer shell is extremely eye-catching with the main pink tone.

The included carrying case of Kinera Freya is white and printed with the same pattern as on the ears, which looks very nice. That is probably the most colorful headphone box.

DESIGN AND FINISHING

Kinera Freya has an appearance that makes anyone who sees it admire. The housing of the headset is made from glossy resin with flowing textures combined with thin gold foil added to increase the elegance. I don’t claim these gold foils are real gold, but it is sparkling and beautiful.

Kinera Freya has two color versions: light pink and black. Each color brings its charm.

According to information from NSX, each housing side of Kinera Freya is finished, painted, and assembled by hand. Took after an hour to complete a housing part, excluding assembly time. When looking at the housings, there is no pair of headphones like any other pair of headphones. Each headset is a unique work. That proves they are created by the hands of artisans, not machines.

Kinera Freya uses a 2-pin 0.78mm plug standard. That is also the plug standard that I recommend you choose. The MMCX is convenient when you don’t care whether it’s plugged in right or wrong, but it will rotate when used.

The conductor that comes with Kinera Freya has an unattractive design and is in sync with the housing. Still, it’s a well-finished rope. Jacks and connectors are covered with metal firmly. The Y-string splitter has a sharp Kinera logo engraved. 2-strand braided wire, and it seems to use OFC copper core.

Kinera Freya feels very good to the ear thanks to its semi-Custom design. With medium and larger ear sizes like mine, it feels very comfortable and comfortable to wear. The weight of the ear is not too heavy, like metal housing earphones so that they can be worn for a long time without ear fatigue.

Kinera Freya’s soundproofing ability is very good when it covers almost the entire outer cavity of my ear. Sound insulation is also affected by the type of ear tips you use. It is noted that the sound pipe size of Kinera Freya is larger than that of most conventional IEM headphones. The diameter of the sound pipe is about 14.

However, if you have small ears, I recommend you try the Kinera Freya before you buy it because it may cause an earache due to the size of the housing being quite large.

SOUND QUALITY

With Kinera Freya, I decided to use the included white ear tips instead of Final Audio’s ear tips. Finally, ‘s ear tips increase the bass and increase the treble, causing quite annoying jarring. With white ear tips, the sound becomes softer and smoother. In addition, you can also try other 3rd party ear tips, as long as it suits your taste.

Kinera Freya has a very neutral sound, not flashy. Clear, detailed, and extremely good separation in the price range. It is more suitable for those who prefer a bright and technical sound than those who prefer a warm, emotional sound.

Bass :

The bass range has a moderate amount, balanced to fit the remaining two bands. It focuses a lot on the mid-bass part and has good control, creating a solid texture for this sound range. The sub-bass part is deep but not pulled by the tail and has too strong a vibration. The attack speed is quite good and well-controlled; it does not create a feeling of darkness or encroachment.

The bass range on the Kinera Freya is round in many respects. It can play a lot of different genres but the best, in my opinion, is Jazz, Rock, and Classical rather than mainstream Pop or R&B music.

Mid :

Well fine-tuned both and tonal color and emphasis. The instruments and singer vocals are lively and inspiring. The singer’s voice tends to move forward, standing out in the background. The high mid is emphasized, making the female singer’s voice more soaring.

Details in the mid-range on Kinera Freya are shown especially well, clarifying even the details in the mix. There’s plenty of space between the instruments, so separation is obvious.

However, Kinera Freya will sometimes be sibilant and feel a bit cold in some notes. It would be better if the mid was compensated with a little more warmth and the body was thicker. But in return, the clarity and detail of Kinera Freya are too good in the price range, so this mid-range can still be assessed as having good quality.

Treble :

Up and down, there is a very good detail. It’s spongy and crunchy, with no harsh feeling. The low-treble is enhanced to increase the clarity of this tonal range but is still well controlled.

Space :

The stage recreated by Kinera Freya is like a Studio studio, not too spacious, but the width and depth are quite good in the price range. The background is static to make the image reproduced clearly, especially with good sources. Although it is a Hybrid headset, Kinera Freya has shown three very seamless and balanced sound bands.

Kinera Freya’s ability to separate the instrument layers is also very respectable in this price range, thanks to the quiet sound.

COMPARISON with Shozy Form 1.4

Shozy Form 1.4 is our favorite because what it brings is too good for the price. Shozy Form 1.4 has a full, warm sound. It is completely different from Kinera Freya’s sound pattern.

Shozy Form 1.4 has better bass with more volume. And indeed, its mid-range is also easier to hear with the majority. But with the Treble strip, Kinera Freya will be completely overwhelmed by its detail and ability to separate. The treble strip on Shozy Form 1.4 is gentle and sometimes a bit faded.

After all, Kinera Freya is a very good IEM headset in the price range. It has the design and finishes as a premium product. The ability to reproduce detailed, neutral, and technical sound. Maybe some people will find it a bit bright due to the emphasized high-mid and low-treble parts, but Kinera Freya is indeed born for those who like to listen to natural light. Its treble range is great in this price range.
