Dreams – Making games? How can it be successful, especially when even a mini-game also includes a whole process, in which the most difficult part is the complex programming languages?
Making an anime?
I have spent time working with animation projects so I understand the complexity from character model building, even the attaching joints so that there are no errors, etc.
That’s right, these “technical” things are all “crazy” things out of the control of a gamer and graphic designer like the writer, so there’s nothing to do but dream about the remote thing …
Suddenly, one beautiful day, the development company Media Molecule lit up a glimmer of hope for the writer’s “summer lunch dream” by announcing the birth of the “Dreams” project.
It is easy to understand that the initial reception of gamers for the game is almost nothing compared to the E3 heroes at that time including God of War, The Last of Us Part II, or even Ghost of Tsushima.
Dreams’ approach is not aimed at the majority of gamers, quite specific because this is a risky project of the developer itself.
However, at least for the writer, from the date of the announcement to the time of touching the Early Access 2018, the dream of making a demo game has never cooled down.
And then Dreams escaped from Early Access, officially released on the 2019 Valentine’s Day season.
The game quickly showed the extremely potential value that it can bring, so that a novice like this writer could do what you never thought would be done.
What Are Dreams?
You can tell me that this is not just a normal game, but a brilliant “software”, or good game worth a try on PlayStation 4!
Dreams’ playground is about creating every creative aspect that you can think of, you can play and “touch” immediately without having to worry about how the system operates in a complicated way.
You can make an animated film, or even compose a piece of music to share in the growing community of “Dreamverse” – the phrase combining Dreams and Universe, which is similar to “Dream Universe ”.
You can even show off your results on Twitter or Facebook, or use them as “artwork” to enrich your portfolio (portfolio).
The most special (and thank you, thank you), is the absence of complex C ++ code, or the Java programming language.
The developer has been trying to simplify and optimize the system to the extent possible (and constantly update additional features and convenient editing), but be assured that this is not the case for the lack of depth in the experience.
That being said, no matter how simplified, the main thing is that we have to take the time to study and understand how to run our projects in Dreams.
This is probably the only major barrier that will make many gamers a little “unwilling” to want to experience this game.
But if you can sit back and invest some time, you will realize that this is a unique experience!
Fortunately, all Dreams’ learning curriculum is not boring at all!
Everything is made as a highly interactive educational game, presented live and interwoven vividly, and interestingly to constantly stimulate us to do it immediately.
The company bravely discarded many words capable of lulling, players will be taught only through inspirational audio voice (must be good at English, but rest assured there are no professional words)
Directly use the tool with a convenient interface, reasonable user guide with a lovely mouse pointer, and always joke with different emotions.
Dreams classes range from simple to complex steps, including duplicating, rotating, modifying shapes (squares, rectangles, etc.) to logic creation, for characters to interact with the door, the door will open / close, or more complicated like creating cutscenes, etc.
Each part is divided clearly, depending on what needs to learn, just study it.
Media Molecule understands the psychology, equips a set of “kit” for players who are “too lazy” with pre-made screens, widgets or mechanisms have been conveniently modified.
The only thing that needs to be done is to work hard, put in the effort, and put your imagination into your design.
For example, the following is a short game screen that the writer created after a day of immersion.
As you can see, from a person who has never been to any school about game design, I am now able to create a game screen that works quite well on PS4, including stages like designing the screen and creating simple interaction.
So this is a big plus point of Dreams when compared to other creating games software on the market.
If there is a drawback, it is probably the controller, the game does not currently support VR (though it will be updated in the future), and only supports two types: manual Dualshock 4 or PlayStation Move.
The control sometimes is not convenient and also lacks a bit of accuracy, hoping in the future the company will support more mouse and keyboards via PlayStation 4.
In general, from the initial steps, Dreams constantly urged the writers to diligently study, inspired by other experts (including Youtuber) who are increasingly perfecting their beautiful products in Dreams.
What if you are not a creator?
Rest assured, Dreams also offers a whole single player called “Art’s Dreams”, and the most important is still “DreamSurfing” – a form of surfing the web to play, watch and enjoy excellent works from the Other players’ parts around the world.
The writer only asked for a brief review of “Art’s Dreams” – the single-player that Media Molecule made, to show the power and ability that the game will bring.
The playtime of this section was very short (2-3 hours), but it did not disappoint.
Media Molecule’s story is concise but full of sentiments, many humanitarian lessons are embedded like the fear of loneliness, friendship, and the “depression” of an artist called “Art”.
The story gradually guides the player to see how the main character expresses his feelings through those worries.
“Art’s Dreams” brings a deeper perspective of an artist’s life.
Throughout the adventure through the story, the gameplay of Art’s Dreams is spread smoothly when combining the moments of the Rhythm (music), to experience the taste of the adventure style of pointing and clicking.
More surprisingly, the company also throws in action, flying, and horizontal screen shooting.
It sounds like a mixed hotpot, but no, it is all elaborate, including each humorous and satirical dialogue.
Especially, we cannot forget to mention the excellent soundtrack of “Art’s Dreams”, making this short-term experience more complete and high-quality than ever.
After experiencing “Art’s Dreams”, what else do we do?
As the writer mentioned above, the remaining job is to surf the web with “DreamSurfing” – where you will be overwhelmed by the imagination of many other artists who are “creating” to express day by day.
This can be said to be a true library, divided into experiences such as playing games, watching movies, enjoying 3D paintings, or even listening to the tunes made by the players in Dreams.
You can detect even the screen remakes of the classic Nintendo game titles (Zelda, Mario).
Or playing in an open-world game, racing against the kart genre, or experiencing games like the Souls series!
Not all games have a clear shape, and depending on the time of experience, each gamer will have different assessments when surfing “waves” in the colorful world of Dreams.
But the writers can not deny being “addicted” when being constantly curious to discover creations from many other players.
Experience in “DreamSurfing” is similar to what game you choose to enjoy in the “stores” of Steam or PlayStation.
Since all those dreams are free, there’s no reason not to try, right?
