Design
The SONY MDR-XB950B1 is still made of plastic but feels no cramp in the hand. The headset is made of metal so it feels solid. The outer surface of the ear is made of plastic, but not glossy, avoid sticking to the hand. The XB950B1 is equipped with NFC technology for fast connectivity to mobile devices.
The left ear has a power button, two LEDs, a “Bass Effect” button to enable / disable the Bass Boost, charging port, 3.5mm port and voice communication. The strange point is that Sony does not use plastic buttons to protect the charging port.
On the right there is a volume control and transfer the song, receive the call.
Inside the headset is a 40mm Dynamic Speaker, so there is an outlet for the speaker.
The ear piece is very thick and has a rounded red border in contrast to the dark background of the device.

Sound
The XB Series and the MDB XB950B1 keep the Vshape sound very specific to young, powerful music players. This is a good thing, because Sony still has a lot of other lines for light music.
Even when the Bass Effect (Boost Bass) is turned off, the headphones have a lot more bass than the average. This bass is much more than the headphones. When the Bass Effect is turned on, the bass volume is even higher, and only for real bassheads. For those who listen to the bass off the bass is still able to hear, but when turned on this feature, those who do not hear it will feel a bit uncomfortable. The bass of the XB950B1 is deep enough, not comparable to the Denon Dxxxx headphones but more than Sony’s lower-range earphones. The sub bass is played almost uncontrolled, so the play spread out the entire background sound. This part is softened, so it is less stressful but vibration is very strong, pulling the long tail so the background sound always has sub bass, so even listening to the slow music also feel vibrant. The mid bass also has a similar feel to it, it does not focus on a point that seems a bit thin, so even though there is no strong punchy feel, it creates a very energetic and intense atmosphere. I’ve heard a lot of bass, because the big companies like Beats, Skullcandy, Sennheiser and even other Sony XB series are moving towards the bass, be more. For those who are looking for heavy, rich bass, and have the ability to … increase more, the XB950B1 is the number one choice!
This mid-section reminds me of Sony’s earlier XBA-4. Mid is not too bright if compared to the current standard, also in the neutral form is not dark. But the mid is made quite clear. The low and middle mid-range is lightly, with a fairly moderate tone. The high mid section is slightly light up so there is light sibalance, not too serious but still be able to recognize. But the electronic, not sweet that the XB950B1 match with pop music. Try Poppy’s Breezeblocks, the singer’s voice is a little autotune, sounds pretty weird and well suited to this song. With such a mid-range, the XB950B1 is not the ideal headset for jazz, but the headphones shine in Pop, Rave, EDM.
The treble of the XB950B1 also has many similarities with the mid. Try with Specter, Treble is not low but quite enough. Treble is light, smooth and oriented towards electronics, not sweet. Treble does not have as much playing space as the bass-less headphones, but still plays bass and clarity. This treble is not hard to hear, but enough to turn the XB950B1 into a Vshape headset, not just heavy on the normal. Like the mid, the treble and light electronics help the headset to listen to Pop, EDM very well.
Summary
The Sony MDR XB950B1 has a few upgrades compared to the XB950BT, but it’s still sold by Sony, so it’s still a great choice for basshead at this price point.
