DESIGN AND FINISHING
The design of WH-XB700 is still minimalist but youthful style of SONY.
The whole WH-XB700 is finished from plastic with a rough surface so it gives a very light weight, only 195g. The advantage of a rough surface is that it is very difficult to scratch or stick with the fingerprint, ensuring that the headset will not fade color after long periods of use.
The headband frame is reinforced with sturdy steel core to help increase toughness when used. At the top of the headband, there is a soft layer of leather on the head to help reduce the pressure on the head when wearing.
The earcup part of the WH-XB700 is a medium-sized, not too bulky on-ear design that is very suitable for Asian ears. Earcup is capable of rotating 90 degrees, very handy when you want to put this headset into a backpack or bag. The surface of the earcup is completely smooth, the SONY logo has been placed on the headband.
Leather cushions are finished from memory foam for a very smooth and comfortable feel. No hot ears and sweating as much as regular foam pads.
On the left earcup, we have 1 Type-C charging port, 1 port 3.5mm audio-in, 1 mic receiver hole, power button, status notification LED and 1 Custom button capable of programming features further we will find out. In addition, the left earcup contains an NFC one-touch antenna.
The right earcup has only 3 control buttons to stop playing and shuffle and 2 buttons to increase or decrease the volume. SONY is also quite subtle when the surface of each button has a separate bezel so that you can easily operate without looking.
Overall, the design and finishing of the WH-XB700 is not too special but it is very well made to bring a sense of certainty and trust.
FEATURES AND CONNECTIVITY
The good news on the WH-XB700 is that SONY has expanded the connectivity of entry-level headphones on par with high-end headphones. Not only supports NFC one-touch connection, Bluetooth wireless connection, but also the WH-XB700 can be connected directly via the AUX cable via 3.5mm port. From now on, you never have to worry about your headphones running out of battery that you can’t use like the previous XB650BT. The detail and sound can also be greatly improved through direct wiring.
WH-XB700 uses Bluetooth 4.2 standard that supports popular codecs such as SBC, AAC and AptX.
Built-in Microphone directly on the headset, you can enjoy better sound quality call through WH-XB700.
There is nothing to say if SONY does not include WH-XB700 with the ability to customize via the bundled application called SONY HEADPHONE CONNECT. At a pleasant price, we have access to almost identical high-end features on the WH-1000XM3 flagship.
The ability to customize the amount of Bass on the headset if you feel the WH-XB700 has a little excess of bass, you can reduce it. If the bass is not enough, simply drag the control bar to the left. Extremely flexible and intelligent.
The DSEE (short for Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) feature only found on high-end headphones is now available on the WH-XB700. This feature will use SONY’s proprietary algorithm to restore every detail of compressed music files, for higher quality sound closer to the original CD record.
The CUSTOM button I mentioned above can be programmed via this Headphone Connect app. You can program it to call out virtual assistants like Siri, Google Assistant or Alexa, depending on the phone you’re using.
There are also some other cool features waiting for you to discover on WH-XB700.

EXPERIENCE TO USE AND SOUND
SONY WH-XB700 is capable of playing music for up to 30 continuous hours as announced by the manufacturer. Actual experience will depend on the volume level and settings of the headset, but that number is certainly enough for you to experience throughout the week. I tried continuously opening this headset at the highest bass and 70% volume, the results were very satisfactory, after 27 hours 30 minutes, the battery reported red. SONY WH-XB700 also supports fast charging technology when it only takes 10 minutes to charge, you can use continuous listening for up to 90 minutes. Even if the battery runs out, you can still plug in the 3.5mm jack and use the WH-XB700 as a regular wired headset.
Wearing experience of the WH-XB700 is very good, much better than the previous XB650BT. Thanks to its lightweight, rugged construction, top-of-the-line padding and extremely comfortable earpads, it feels extremely comfortable and relaxing to wear. The phenomenon of hot ears only appear after about 5 hours of continuous wear, about that time is also the time when your ears need to rest already.
The sound on the WH-XB700 retains the most characteristic of the EXTRA BASS series.
The bass plays a lot in volume even when the bass settings are at an equal level. The sub-bass is very thick and the vibration is good, making Dance music exploding and excited. Bass is round and soft, not hard and clumpy, so it’s easy to listen to. A commendable point on the WH-XB700 is the bass band that controls more clearly than the previous EXTRA BASS I’ve heard. The phenomenon of bass dragging the tail, flaring and opaque has been eliminated to bring out more sound.
The mid range is warm and seasoned, with a slight drawback to the song. The level of detail of sound is quite good, especially when DSEE mode is enabled. Voice and musical instruments keep the clarity and smooth at a decent level. Singers are no longer muffled by the bass range before.
The high range is also made quite smoothly. Looking at the words EXTRABASS, you probably won’t be able to ask for a super detailed, tinkling treble range. However, the treble sound on the WH-XB700 is quite brittle, do not roll-off too soon enough to keep the music sound fresh.
Honestly, the WH-XB700 will not be for fans of classical or jazz music, it will be most suitable for modern Hip-hop, R&B, EDM, or Pop, aimed at young music lovers, vibrant.
SUMMARY
SONY WH-XB700 is definitely one of the EXTRA BASS headphones that has the clearest sound I’ve ever heard, the booming bass range but still retaining the detailed vocal and musical instrument, treble strip enough to hear. Well done and support lots of features and connectivity. This is the trump card of Sony in the segment to compete with rivals of the same level.
