Recently, the US embargo has blocked Huawei’s parts supplies, making it unable to use Google services. Many people think that Huawei’s future will be very difficult after the US ban, but after a year of facing this ban, Huawei is still doing well.
Except for the inability to use Google apps, the ban doesn’t seem to have much of an effect on the Huawei Mate 30 Pro. The phone is still standing on par with home phones like the iPhone 11 Pro and Galaxy Note 10 Plus.
- Design
Mate 30 Pro gives users a sense of luxury. The screen is designed with curved edges like the flagship Samsung, but the curvature at the edges of the Mate 30 Pro is somewhat more curved. To do this, Huawei has made the metal chassis much thinner compared to other phones. Last year, Huawei equipped the Mate 20 Pro with fast 40W charging support. In the real-time use test, the Mate 30 Pro quickly beat the two cult rivals, Note 10 Plus and OnePlus 7T in the test of mixed use, wifi connection and video playback. The Mate 30 Pro lasts nearly as long as the ROG Phone 2 with a 6,000 mAh battery.
You can comfortably use the Mate 30 Pro for 1 day without charging. You can also use the Mate 30 Pro for two days or more with more “lighter” usage.
- Camera
When manufacturers focus more on software, Huawei chose to add hardware to upgrade the quality of the camera. This Huawei upgrade offers a more flexible shooting experience.
The cameras on the Mate 30 Pro are set up similarly to the P30 Pro, but there are a few important changes that make the photography experience better. The biggest change is probably the upgraded wide-angle camera to 40MP. Higher resolution results in brighter wide-angle shots.
Another difference on the Mate 30 Pro is that the optical zoom is reduced to 3x, while on the P40 Pro it is 5x.

The Mate 30 Pro can record 4K video at 60 fps. Although the default on the device we tested was 1080p at 30 fps. Font removal effects, wide angle video recording and time lapse are some of the video features supported on the Mate 30 Pro. The phone is also capable of smooth slow-motion recording at a frame rate of 7,680 fps at 720p.
- Software
During the first 3 days of use, I tried using the apps Huawei recommends on the device. These are applications created by Huawei to replace Google applications. Don’t expect too high of these apps, though, as expected these apps aren’t as smooth as Google’s apps. For those who are used to using Google apps on Android devices, this is a barrier when they choose to buy the Mate 30 Pro.
You can still download forgotten apps from the Google Play Store, but you’ll need to download it through a 3rd party app called LZPlay. It will take some time to go through the steps of allowing access to be able to download applications.
- Audio
The speaker sound of the Mate 30 Pro is loud. Place the Mate 30 Pro next to the Mate 20 Pro and play the same music, the Mate 30 Pro’s sound “engulfs” the Mate 20 Pro completely.
A bit of annoyance from the loudspeaker is so loud that when playing music with the external speaker, the Mate 30 Pro vibrates slightly.
