Dunu EST 112

Dunu has been making waves with some high-profile IEM models; the most significant is the well-received Dunu SA6 for around $550. So it’s little surprise that they are releasing a new IEM model in 2021 for $489, namely the Dunu EST 112.

This price range is already very competitive, with the highly-rated Moondrop Blessing 2 and Blessing 2 Dusk models is gaining a foothold in the sub-$350 price range. That again raises the question, whether the Dunu EST 112 makes a difference in this price range, and is it worth choosing over those available options; let’s find out.

BOXING AND ACCESSORIES

If you have experienced Dunu’s products, they take great care of each of their products. The outside is still a large box with pictures describing the configuration and design of the headset, besides certifications from supporting companies such as Knowles, Comply.

The boxing method is still the same as the previous products with a pull-out design. Inside is our main character wrapped in a thick shockproof foam. The upper compartment will be a place to place headphones, cables with optional replacement jacks such as 2.5mm BAL, 3.5mm SE, 4.4mm BAL.

Dunu is famous for providing a wide range of accessories when they provide a complete range from a cleaning brush for headphones to a full set of different tips, a carrying case:

1x leather earphone case

3x pairs of Spinfit ear tips

6x pairs of regular silicone ear tips

1x Pair of Comply Foam ear tips

1x 3.5mm to 6.3mm jack

1x Airplane adapter

4x DUNU quick conversion module jacks (3.5 Single End, 3.5mm Balanced, 2.5mm Balanced & 4.4mm Balanced)

1x MMCX Leads included with the module

1x Ear cleaning brush

1x microfiber towel

1x User Manual

DESIGN AND FINISHING

Unlike the previous DK models, which had a small but comfortable circular design, the Dunu EST 112 has a more ergonomic design, similar to many CIEM models on the market.

Dunu chose to house on the Dunu EST 112 aluminum alloy with a polished stainless steel faceplate, and they fit very well – both in terms of aesthetics and comfort. Our headphones have a sophisticated yet eye-catching appearance and attract all eyes.

Dunu EST 112 headphones are still equipped with a smart modular jack connection. A default conductor will be included with the four most available connectors from Single End to Balanced. You can confidently pair the Dunu EST 112 with any source without worrying about finding replacement wires like before.

The Dunu EST 112 is four cores, 6N high purity OCC copper material for better signal transmission than conventional OFC copper.

All finishing details on the conductor are made extremely detailed and sharp, without any mistakes.

EXPERIENCE AND MIXING

Although it is no longer the small circular design like the DK series, which has a very comfortable wearing experience, even with that design change, the feeling of wearing on the Dunu EST 112 is still very good. I have an average ear size, so the experience of wearing this headset does not have any problems. I also tried wearing this headset for a long time and still did not experience a hot or heavy phenomenon. There is an air outlet design on the faceplate part.

With an impedance of 10 Ohm, most mobile devices can pair with this headset easily, but I still recommend pairing it with DACs/AMPs or music players. To be able to experience the full sound quality of this headset.

SOUND QUALITY

Dunu EST 112 uses three drivers: a 13.5mm dynamic driver with a Beryllium-coated membrane for the bass range, a Knowles BA driver for the mid-range, and two electrostatic drivers Sonion for the treble range.

Dunu EST 112 has a tune that can do well in all genres of music; they have thick bodies in the upper-bass and lower-mid and only a little sib in the treble range. Make the Dunu EST 112 an IEM suitable for jazz, classical, and acoustic music…

Bass

Sure, round, just enough. The bass range on the Dunu EST 112 is taken care of by a 13.5mm dynamic driver covered with a Beryllium membrane, so this headset has good dynamics and impact; the drumbeat is very powerful, solid, and round. The sub-bass part has a moderate layer thickness; generally, the bass range on the Dunu EST 112 is well controlled, so there is no encroachment phenomenon; they have just enough quality and quantity.

Mid

The midrange band on this ear is slightly forward. Although it is a V-Shape headset, the mid-range on the Dunu EST 112 has a moderate distance from the orchestra, not close to the ear. They get good weight with male vocals, natural and pleasant. Because the upper-mid part is boosted, a slight glare will occur when listening to female vocals or mixes.

Treble

It seems this is the real problem with this headset. The lower-treble part is boosted. Create peaks in the 5kHz region, so there will be a harsh glare in some tracks.

Obviously, with the “S,” “F,” “T” sounds, I find the problem more serious with the “SH” sounds. Thankfully, this can be slightly remedied by switching to Final’s set of E tips, which work well at reducing this glare quite a bit.

One final limitation is that the upper-treble seems to lack a bit of energy. However, this is not necessarily a minus point because it creates an airy space, and the instrument has more room to “breathe.”

Soundstage

It can be said that the Dunu EST 112 is competitive in terms of detail and good engineering ability in their price range. In particular, both the details in the treble and bass ranges are surprisingly good, when I can hear the most clearly for “microdynamics” or endings in 1 tone and texture in the track. They are moderately airy but have good layer separation. The soundstage has a decent depth and width. The ability to reproduce instrument positions in the orchestra accurately.

Compare with other headphones in the same segment

Dunu SA6 – $550

The main rival of the Dunu EST 112 is the brother who owns up to 6 drivers on each side, the SA6. When the SA6 has a very impactful bass range and good dynamics with the BA driver design. The dynamic driver on the Dunu EST 112 delivers a more natural and dynamic bass.

Moreover, the treble range on these two headphones is completely different. While the Dunu EST 112 can sometimes sound a bit bright, the SA6 delivers a smoother and more balanced treble range.

Moondrop Blessing 2 & Dusk – $320 & $330

The Blessing 2 and Dusk are considered the standard for the best IEMs in the mid-range segment at this price point. While the Blessing 2 leans more towards the general, the Dusk 2 will bring clear sub-bass and a slightly boosted upper-mid. In both cases, tuning the lower-treble part a little will be able to get close to the sound quality of the Dunu EST 112, but to be similar to the Dunu EST 112, the best will be the Blessing 2.

In terms of technical capabilities, the Dunu EST 112 beats both IEMs from the Moondrop family, and the comfort on the Dunu EST 112 is also better than the Blessing 2 with a rather thick nozzle.

CONCLUDE

The Dunu EST 112 headset has won the community’s hearts with a new Tribrid driver system with an impressive pitch from appearance to sound quality. This headset will be extremely suitable for passionate music genres such as Jazz, Acoustic or classical.
