Design

The most noticeable when holding the S-EM9 on the hand that is the housing. The housing of the S-EM9 is made of acrylic as its custom-designed headset, as well as the earbud headset S-EM6. This headset is quite large, much larger than many of its other universial headphones. This is also understandable because the acrylic layer has nine small speakers. This shell is completely non-dense but slightly opaque so that the user can look inside and even see the outermost speakers. The ES – Earsonics pattern on the right and the 9 on the left look simple but really beautiful. The inside of the headset carved a series of numbers, this is the series number of each headset, so each S-EM9 sold is unique and different.

The S-EM9 comes in two versions: a traditional 2-pin connector for Westone, UE, Unique Melody or Shure headset MMCX. Earsonics made this connection quite tightly, even deliberately pull out to replace the wire also need to use force so users do not have to worry about the headset falling out during use.

The S-EM9’s cables are identical to the company’s other headphones, a standard set of unmodified wires from low-end products such as the SM2 iFI to the high end EM32. Earsonics strings are made quite soft, avoiding microphonic phenomena when touched or used in windy conditions. The S-EM9 connector is a 3.5 “, L-shaped head to prevent breakage, loss of signal or even cable failure. Overall, the S-EM9 is designed to be more usable than to show off. Headphones are not polished, not many patterns but beautiful in a simple, easy to use.

Practical experience

Feeling wear

The S-EM9 is one of Earsonics’ biggest wearable earphones, but the company has also included this in its design. With earphones and the experience of designing universal earphones, the company has made the S-EM9 to fit as many people’s ear shapes as possible. Headphones are made quite thick but round and do not have rugged points so there is no need to wear when worn. When compared directly to the S-EM6, the S-EM9 is rounder, with no inner edge. The length of the S-EM9 is as short as the majority of other earbuds, so even those with a small ear can wear it.

Headphones with two-tiered earbuds will have a slightly outward-facing ear, but they are more comfortable to hold than the Fitear 334. When used with single-sided ear tips, especially with the Spinfit The S-EM9 fits snugly into the ears of the listener, and fits comfortably into the ear and ear cushions. The tube of the headphones is short but still very deep so when used with the small ear type will feel more comfortable. Overall, the company draws on the experience of designing this headset from S-EM6, creating a headset that can still have many speakers but still feels comfortable and soundproof.

Coupling

With a high sensitivity of 119dB per 1mW and a small impedance of 38.5 Ohms, the S-EM9 is not a hard-to-hear headset when it comes to volume. Even popular music sources, such as the iPod Touch 4, iPod Classic, iPhone or Android phone, can make the S-EM9 sound at full volume. The point that S-EM9 requires is the quality of the source, the detail, the cleanliness and the sound quality of the headset.

With popular music sources such as the LG G2, the S-EM9 has a large enough volume but feels a bit lighter, less accented and above all a narrow, not impressed sound. With the iPod Touch, the sound is brighter but as with the phones, the sound quality is lacking and the sound field has not been fully expanded. Compared with the Astell & Kern AK100, the S-EM9 has more power, and the music has a bit more depth. But when combined with high-end sources such as the AK240 and AK380, the S-EM9 really shines, the sound is brighter, the details are revealed and the sound field is expanded. So we can conclude, S-EM9 does not require the pull of the source of music, but the higher the use of sources, the better sound and more choppy! The overall sound of the S-EM9 is quite neutral, not too dark but not bright or cold, so the sound to the ears is also influenced by the source of music.

Bass sound

The bass will not be the first component the user hears when they first put the headset on. This is not an S-EM9 bass, but it can not be compared to the S-EM6’s rich, high velvety bass. The S-EM9 has just the right size of a Balanced Armature speaker, but it can still do a pretty decent job. The sub-depth down deep enough but not emphasized much, not stretched and spread so not heavy in this section. Compared with Fitear 334’s heavy bass, the headphones from France are slightly less expensive. But in return this control is pretty good. Agility is played up, with good detail, the sound is enough for the listener to feel the force from the instrument emits it. The speed of the bass is quite fast, the drums are played down and bounce up, not leaving much residual sound. This is pretty good for anyone who listens to high speed music like Metal, Rock or Bluegrass

The bass of the S-EM9 is similar to that of the Balanced Armature, which is light-weight, not too thick and fast, rather than the two Velvet and S-EM6 earbuds. The mid bass and subwoofer of the headset have a certain balance, which is no more than a fraction of what the lower part has in common with the less Earsonics earphones. Velvet with a deep depression in the middle, so it looks very youthful, S-EM6 with a low intensity and dark to S-EM9, perhaps the company has found the appropriate bass strings and neutral as possible. This bass player makes the S-EM9 fit in a wide variety of genres, from pop to jazz, to vocals or to high-speed metal and rock. Only dance and hip hop songs that need a lot of bass, the new S-EM9 can not perform perfectly.

Medium

From headphones like SM3 v2 or SM64, the Earsonics are known for their warm, thick midrange, and it looks like it has been successful when many of its earphones are used to enjoy the sound. But until recently, new headphones such as the Velvet, SM64 have been somewhat brighter. But one thing that does not change is that the detail and the intimacy do not go away at all. The centerpiece of the S-EM9 is probably “borrowed” from the Velvet, with many varieties as well as upgrades. The central part of the S-EM9 is slightly neutral, with slightly inclined towards the light. The low mid does not feel affected, encroaching from the bass so become separate and clean. The vocalist in a song is slightly backed up towards the orchestra, not in the head of the listener. But the detail and arrangement of the S-EM9’s instruments makes this part of the instrument far from the instrument, so there’s always room for sound between the components so they do not stick together.

This is when compared to products from Fitear, or from the previous products such as SM64 or S-EM6 is quite thin, not spread out in two ears that focus at one point. Alison Krauss’s voice in Stay is pitched in one spot, with more voices than the slightly tinged sound that makes for a solid, light feel. The high mid may be slightly more prominent than the other two, making the female voices rising up without the feeling of being compressed, cut to the highest notes. Sibalance seldom occurs, but when it occurs in very high voices, it is at an acceptable level. The high center of gravity is shown in good detail, with enough clarity. The voice of Edith Piaf’s Non Je Ne Regrette Rien is shown with high precision, cleanliness.

High voice

The highlight of the S-EM9 is in the high range, which is also the biggest reason to upgrade from Velvet or S-EM6 to this new flagship. High pitched sound is more than any of its universally available headphones. Earsonics often criticized that the high pitched parts did not make a good impression on the ultra-compact handsets such as the SM3, SM64, but to the S-EM9, the high pitched sound would satisfy the treble-head. The high-pitched space is quite spacious, does not create a sense of limitation and must overlap with other sounds.

The cymbals and hymns of the album Explorations in Space and Time are played light, up to the highest note, in clarity and rich in energy. The height of the S-EM9 is high but without creating a sibalance so the overall tone of the headphones is still very comfortable and natural. In a piece of music, true to the diaphragm, the upper and middle parts will have a lot more space than the bass, making the headset a little bit lighter than neutral, but not too significant. This height is also located at the edge of the headset, creating a wider sound field.

Detail / Sound field

The Earsonics Premiums range includes headphones with different sound qualities. With Velvet and a subdued bass, but with a medium and high brightness, the S-EM6 is warm and affectionate, the S-EM9 with lightness and neutrality, but with a common feature of high-end detail and sound.

With the S-EM9, the singer’s voice as well as the high part is quite close to the listener should create a sense of closeness, accompanied by small components are also easier to listen to the feeling of good detail. The small gongs in the instrumental Seven are very clear, thick and easy to hear. When playing vocal tracks, the singer’s mouth or tap on the surface of the piano is played out clearly for the audience to enjoy. The details of the S-EM9 will not be clear, making the errors of the music worse than reference headphones like the HD800, but enough to make the listener catch the small details in the music. Lower-level headphones can not be displayed. And this is also the design philosophy of the company that made the S-EM9, you just sit back and enjoy the familiar music, S-EM9 will express it comfortably with the detail needed. Make sure the song is clean and fresh as the first time!

The sound field of S-EM9 is not the largest sound field in the world, but a familiar saying when it comes to sound is that “Size does not matter but what we get with it. ” The two sides of the ear are sufficient to remove the sound from the ear. The high-energy sound also makes this part more apparent. The sound, layout arrangement of the audio components in S-EM9 made Earsonics quite reasonable. In the complex classical music, the sound components, the instruments are not attached to each other. These instruments spread out in all directions, both in the ears and front to create a sense of 3D space, clean and airy. Also, with this wide-ranging sound, the listener feels the sound, everything becomes closer than the sound is too far away, creating gaps!
