amazon HPE ProLiant ML110 Gen10 reviews
Perhaps small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) have tried to replace their older servers with new generation of servers using Intel Xeon Scalable processors in recent server models Dell EMC’s PowerEdge and HPE ProLiant. But budget constraints make them think and weigh a lot. The good news is that recently, HPE has an answer for SMB.
HPE offers scalable Xeon Scalable at the fingertips of small businesses
Upgraded as a scalable tower server using the first Scalable Intel Xeon processor on the market, the HP ProLiant ML110 Gen10 offers a wide range of processor options and combines them with Many storage options, plus many empty slots to grow with needs.
Businesses with modest workloads generally do not need dual servers, so the HPE ML110 Gen10 becomes an ideal choice. HPE ML110 Gen10 currently supports 7 Scalable CPU Xeon models, so you can reduce the cost and start with the entry-level line using 6-core Bronze 3104, then upgrade to Silver and finally Gold.
Design
The HPE ML110 Gen10 is well built with a sturdy steel frame and a powerful, lockable panel that attaches to the desk with a protective cable. The good news is that the interior is spacious and has plenty of room for upgrades and maintenance.
The motherboard is covered by a large plastic cover, divided into two halves and the CPU socket has a large type heatsink heatsink. This system is cooled by fans 9cm in diameter at the front and rear that we measure emits 44dB at one meter – not the quietest of tower but not heard in normal office environment .
The CPU is surrounded by two arrays of three DIMM slots, allowing DDR4 memory to be pushed up to 192GB. Note that Bronze CPUs support 2.133MHz, Silvers 3000 series and Gold 5120 memory speeds up to 2,400MHz with only 4GHz 4 cores, the powerful Gold 5122 reaches a maximum speed of 2.667MHz.
Scalability seems good because the motherboard provides 5 PCI-Express slots. All accept full-size adapters and have enough horizontal slots for two of them to manage full-length cards.
Storage
The pre-fabricated systems come with a 4-bay cold-swap LFF drill next to the lockable door. The panel above it can be removed and the second 4-cage is easily mounted by sliding it into place and reinstalling the four board screws.
The 4 dual SATA port connectors on the motherboard support both LFF drive drills, and HPE also provides hot-swap versions. There are many other storage options such as CTO model (configurable by order) that can be specified with 8-bay SFF hard drive drills, which can be expanded to 16 drives with the second drill.
If you install both drilling and installing SAS 15K drives, you will need to replace the standard 350W or 550W PSU with HPE’s 800W redundant PSU. The trigger kit costs about 178 tables and can be pre-installed. You also need a backup fan.
RAID starts with the Smart Array S100i Gen10 controller that has been integrated into the motherboard, supporting only stripes, mirrors and RAID5 arrays. It also provides 12 SATA ports with two dedicated HPE’s optional M.2 SATA SSD kit enabled. This card costs around £ 84 and SSD hard drives with 240GB capacity, making the extra cost of £ 400.
Add SAS drives and you’ll need a separate Smart Array RAID card. HPE offers four models, with the top Gen10 P408e-p card adding RAID6 and 60 modes with 4GB of cache protected by Smart Storage battery.
The front panel has room for a thin DVD drive and combo / SATA cable ready and waiting. And if you use virtualization, the motherboard has a microSD card slot to boot into an embedded Hypervisor.
Manage
There is no compromise in the management department for ML110 Gen10 equipped with the iLO5 controller like HPE’s enterprise servers. It provides a well-designed web interface with a wealth of information about key components and tools that provide enhanced operating system while increased memory of the controller lead to increases performance.
Server security is an important feature when iLO5 introduces silicon fingerprints, software validation, encryption and violation detection technology.
The server is equipped with iLO5 Standard license that activates features such as active health monitoring, embedded system protection, agentless management, silicon root of reliable tracking and backup and recovery configuration. It includes a remote control panel before the operating system, but if you want it to control the operating system, you need to upgrade to an Advanced or Essentials license.
We found HPE’s iLO Mobile iOS app that worked well on our iPad, which provides the same level of server detail as the standard web interface. Selecting the app’s Remote Control option also allows us to remotely access the boot menu of our server and operating system from our iPad.
