The Ubiquiti airCam mini is compact in size and is suitable for indoor and small office.

Camera IP Ubiquiti airCam mini is a compact, slim design, just a regular mobile phone. The camera body is made of plastic, and the heavy and heavy metal base allows the camera to stand on flat surfaces. The coupling between the ball body and the circular foot allows airCam mini to rotate (manually) in all directions with ease.

The front lens is 3.6mm fixed, F2.8 aperture, manual focus. Image sensor with 1MP resolution, can shoot movies with 720p HD resolution. Below the lens is the integrated microphone.

The right side is a microSD card slot for storing video directly on the card, handy in the event of network failure.

The back panel is a heat exchanger and reset button so you can easily restore the default settings as needed.

Below the back is a 100Mps LAN port to plug in to the switch, router or directly to the computer and also to the power port for the camera (PoE standard).

In case you do not have a Switch / Router that supports the PoE standard, you can still use the device with the included adapter to turn ordinary LAN ports into PoE LANs.

Design and Build Quality

Design Aesthetics

The Ubiquiti airCam Mini is designed with a focus on compactness and simplicity. Its small, cylindrical shape and minimalist design make it an unobtrusive addition to any environment. The camera’s dimensions are approximately 55 mm x 60 mm (2.2 inches x 2.4 inches), and it weighs around 150 grams (5.3 ounces). This compact form factor allows the camera to be easily mounted in a variety of locations without drawing undue attention.

The airCam Mini is available in a neutral white color, which blends well with most indoor settings. The camera’s body is constructed from durable plastic, which provides a balance between weight and sturdiness. While the plastic construction is not as premium as metal options found in higher-end models, it is sufficient for its intended purpose and contributes to the camera’s lightweight and easy-to-install design.

Build Quality

The build quality of the Ubiquiti airCam Mini is generally robust for a camera of its class. The plastic housing feels solid, and the camera’s components are well-assembled. The lens is protected by a clear, scratch-resistant cover, which helps maintain image clarity over time. The camera is designed to be weather-resistant to some extent, though it is primarily intended for indoor use. For outdoor installations, additional protection or a weatherproof housing may be required.

The camera includes a flexible mounting bracket that allows users to adjust the angle and position of the camera easily. The bracket’s design is straightforward, and it provides secure mounting options for various surfaces. However, the mounting hardware is relatively basic and may require additional tools or accessories for certain installations.

Key Features and Specifications

Image Sensor and Resolution

The Ubiquiti airCam Mini is equipped with a 1/4-inch CMOS image sensor. The camera captures images at a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels (VGA), which is suitable for basic monitoring and surveillance needs. While VGA resolution is relatively low by today’s standards, it provides adequate detail for identifying general shapes and movements.

The CMOS sensor offers decent low-light performance, though it may struggle in very dark conditions. The airCam Mini’s image quality is adequate for its intended use, such as monitoring small areas or providing a visual record of activity in a room.

Lens and Field of View

The airCam Mini features a fixed lens with a focal length of 3.6 mm, providing a field of view (FOV) of approximately 65 degrees. This lens is designed to capture a broad view of the area in front of the camera, making it suitable for monitoring rooms or small spaces. The fixed focal length limits the camera’s flexibility in terms of zoom or focus adjustments, but it simplifies the setup and operation.

Connectivity

The Ubiquiti airCam Mini connects to a network via an Ethernet port, supporting 10/100 Mbps Ethernet speeds. This wired connection ensures a stable and reliable data transfer rate, which is essential for streaming video and maintaining a consistent connection to the network. The camera does not support Wi-Fi, which limits its placement options to areas with accessible Ethernet connections.

The airCam Mini uses the standard ONVIF protocol, making it compatible with a wide range of network video recorders (NVRs) and video management systems (VMS). This interoperability allows users to integrate the camera into existing surveillance setups and manage multiple cameras from a single platform.

Power Supply

The camera is powered via a standard 5V DC power adapter, which is included with the unit. The power adapter connects to the camera through a dedicated port, and the cable length is sufficient for most installation scenarios. The use of a separate power supply ensures that the camera does not rely on Power over Ethernet (PoE) for operation, which simplifies the installation process but may limit flexibility in terms of placement.

Software and Integration

The Ubiquiti airCam Mini is compatible with Ubiquiti’s Network Video Recorder (NVR) software, which provides users with a range of features for managing and recording video from multiple cameras. The NVR software allows users to view live video feeds, configure recording schedules, and access recorded footage.

The camera also supports third-party video management software that is compatible with the ONVIF protocol. This compatibility provides users with flexibility in choosing a video management solution that meets their specific needs and preferences.

Motion Detection and Alerts

The airCam Mini includes basic motion detection functionality, which allows the camera to detect movement within its field of view. When motion is detected, the camera can trigger alerts or initiate recording, depending on the configuration. This feature is useful for monitoring activity and ensuring that important events are captured.

The motion detection sensitivity and accuracy are generally satisfactory, though users may need to adjust settings to minimize false alerts or ensure that the camera captures relevant activity. The lack of advanced motion detection features, such as object recognition or intelligent analytics, may limit the camera’s effectiveness in more complex surveillance scenarios.

Performance

Image Quality

The image quality of the Ubiquiti airCam Mini is adequate for its intended use as a basic surveillance camera. The VGA resolution provides a clear enough view for general monitoring, though the level of detail may be insufficient for tasks that require high-resolution images. The CMOS sensor performs reasonably well in moderate lighting conditions, but image quality may degrade in low-light environments.

The camera’s fixed lens provides a broad field of view, which helps capture a wide area within the camera’s range. However, the fixed focal length limits the camera’s ability to zoom or focus on specific details. Users seeking higher image resolution or enhanced clarity may need to consider higher-end models with more advanced features.

Network Performance

The wired Ethernet connection ensures a stable and reliable network performance for the Ubiquiti airCam Mini. The 10/100 Mbps Ethernet interface provides sufficient bandwidth for streaming VGA video, and the camera’s performance is consistent with its specifications. Users should ensure that their network infrastructure can support the camera’s data transfer requirements and provide a stable connection.

The lack of Wi-Fi connectivity may be a limitation for users who prefer a wireless setup or have difficulty accessing Ethernet connections in certain locations. However, the wired connection minimizes potential issues with interference or signal strength, which can be beneficial for maintaining a reliable video feed.

Software Functionality

The Ubiquiti Network Video Recorder (NVR) software provides a range of features for managing and recording video from the airCam Mini. The software allows users to configure recording schedules, view live feeds, and access recorded footage. The interface is user-friendly and straightforward, making it accessible for both beginners and experienced users.

The camera’s compatibility with third-party video management software provides additional flexibility, allowing users to integrate the airCam Mini into existing surveillance systems. The ONVIF protocol ensures compatibility with a wide range of VMS solutions, though users may need to configure settings to achieve optimal performance and functionality.

Motion Detection

The motion detection functionality of the Ubiquiti airCam Mini is effective for basic monitoring needs. The camera can detect movement within its field of view and trigger recording or alerts based on user-defined settings. The sensitivity and accuracy of the motion detection can be adjusted to suit the environment and reduce false alerts.

While the motion detection feature is useful for monitoring activity, it lacks advanced capabilities such as object recognition or intelligent analysis. Users with more specific surveillance needs may require a camera with more advanced motion detection features.
