amazon GreedFall reviews
GreedFall – In the world of role-playing games, perhaps the fantasy scene has been a familiar image for those who love this genre because many extremely “hot” names have been born like The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, The Witcher 3, Dragon Age … Learning a lot from the above blockbuster games, Spiders created GreedFall.
Using a capitalist country colonialist setting – a relatively new one – to blend the “fantasy” elements, GreedFall from the independent developer Spiders promises to bring players in. a whole new and ambitious world for this series.
You, De Sardet, are an ambassador of the Congregation of Merchants in the land of Teer Fradee – a new island where the major powers are trying to colonize.
As an ambassador, your task is to assist governor Constantin d’Orsay (your cousin) and find a cure for the mysterious epidemic Malichor raging in Serene. And from there, your journey begins …
With a fairly normal start and the plot is not too new, GreedFall has succeeded in building up the excitement for the player by stringing the details of the incident very cleverly, with the main and supporting characters be invested carefully.
During your journey, you will encounter many different characters, some of which will become companions to fight to find the mystery of this land and bring the antidote to Serene.
Each partner is different from home, personality, and fighting style so that you can choose two people that suit your play style.
More than that, the characters have their affection level for you to dominate, thereby forming a friendship and possibly love, it all depends on how you choose the conversation and gender early in the game.
If you are a fan of Bioware’s character building, you will fall in love with GreedFall.
The dialogs in the mission have a variety of options to choose from, these choices will rely on De Sardet’s stats and make the process of the task easier to breathe.
Sometimes with Charisma or High Intuition, you can turn the situation around and not have to fight any enemy.
Besides, in some segments of the conversation, your decisions will also affect the level of affection and trust between you and your fellow characters or factions in the game.
If you choose the right one, the level of credibility will increase, at certain points will open up character quest lines so you can dig deeper into their personalities.
If they make a wrong choice, the credibility between the two will drop, if worse they may leave your gang and some side quests will no longer open up for you!
Because the number of associates accompanying is limited to two people, the writer seemed to think that the supporting characters would not create any highlight, but would be as silent as other role-playing games.
But the truth is not so!
The cutscenes or dialogues in the game will have the participation of your two associates, whoever they are, they will also make comments that match their personality and opinion.
Not only that, if your associates belong to two opposing factions such as the natives and Theleme, they will give conflicting opinions and talk about each other to make the conversations extremely lively!
Finally, the side quest lines in GreedFall are not heavy in terms of “quantity” but extremely heavy in “quality”.
The sidequests will often help players understand more about the world in the game, about factions, about your team members, and have a close connection with the main storyline.
Typically, Kurt’s branch of the Ghost regiment also revealed many details for Coin Guard and the motives of this faction.
All of this merges to make the land of Teer Fradee and its people extremely soulful, multi-colored, and complementary to the plot of GreedFall very much.
Although GreedFall has built unique content, a vibrant world, a relatively great cast of characters, and pretty good fighting mechanics, the game lacks depth in gameplay, resulting in the gameplay. The “plus points” in the game suddenly disappeared after a few hours of playing.
The fighting mechanism of the game is very accessible, whether you start in the Warrior, Technical or Magic branch, the game still revolves around killing the enemy and dealing damage to increase Fury, using Fury to perform powerful attacks.
After leveling up, players will be able to distribute points to learn the buttons in the Skill tree. The entire skill tree is common to all branches like Path of Exile, so you can freely switch and increase points later.
However, after a while of playing, you will find that this whole skill tree is quite “poor” and does not have too much depth of customization but just repeat the basic operations at the beginning of the game, especially those who love melee combat.
Close-range weapons will start with a sword or ax/mace, you will raise points in the skill tree to increase the damage they do. After that, there will be a few larger skill buttons to let you learn how to use… two-handed weapons, but these weapons are quite slow and not everyone likes to use them.
Of course, after you “unlock” these weapons, the whole skill button only increases the damage for two-handed weapons and does not affect one-handed weapons.
However, the last skill button of the Warrior branch is an extremely “powerful” move that allows the player to increase attack speed extremely quickly. This makes you have to waste nearly 10 skill points just to get this technique, corresponding to 10 levels!
This is a complete waste and you will find that these 10 skill points can be used to upgrade into many other branches like Technical’s gun ability (something very cool when dealing massive damage at around Magic’s Stasis or the ability to freeze the enemy would be more reasonable than investing all of it in Warrior.
In contrast to the Warrior branch with only one skill, Magic possesses a skill branch that is too strong when there are Stasis to freeze enemies and draw their armor, the ability to teleport, move, attack long-range spells to destroy. Nearly every enemy in the game (except the Guardians because they are quite resistant to magic), the ability to create magic shields against damage, and the ability to heal.
This entire skill tree can be removed and you won’t notice too much difference if you don’t use the skill, as the damage boost buttons are almost meaningless when you can raise Attributes to unlock more weapons more advanced gas with “huge” power without any worries!
Finally, the ability to fend off (Parry) must be called too powerful when eliminating damage from the enemy (regardless of physical or magic damage, long-range or close range) and increasing the Fury for the player.
If you watch correctly, you can also counterattack and deal damage back to the enemy. This ability is available from the beginning of the game and will “help” you quite a lot in many battles.
In addition to the game mechanics that are somewhat unattractive, GreedFall also suffers some other minus points that the company can learn from experience to improve for the next game.
First, it must be mentioned that the big cities or villages in Teer Fradee are almost “copied” from each other.
If you pay close attention while walking in New Serene, San Matheus, or Hikmet, you will realize that many things are reused throughout the game: buildings, decorative patterns, background characters …
This is most noticeable when you enter the governor’s buildings in all three cities, all with the right amount of decorative items in the right place, the same building architecture without any changes.
Because of that, the game has partly lost the special and historical depth of each region and faction. Unlike the cities in Teer Fradee, Serene is beautifully designed but this is the starting area and you will not spend a lot of time here enjoying.
Unfortunately!
Besides, some unnecessary technical errors are also present in the game. In some dialogues, the angle of rotation instead of panning at the character’s face, there are times when the display error and peek into the wall behind the character or… shoot straight into the brain!
Not only that, but GreedFall’s collision handling is still pretty bad. In some cases you manipulate small collision objects such as walking through thin logs, jumping down / climbing ramps … sometimes you will have to struggle quite a lot for the game to show the trigger button manipulation.
This is even worse when your teammates are too close because at this time the operation will be “chaotic” and will prioritize the show button to talk to teammates.
Also, your teammates have a very hard collision so you will more or less trap you in too small areas when it takes a while for GreedFall to record this to control your teammates backward again.
Finally, in some cutscenes or large areas with too much particle effect, the game will experience a drop in FPS and can lead to game crashes (like Borderlands 3 was previously).
